Default Card HOF nominations

Posted By: jay behrens

Time for a new round of nominations for the Vintage Baseball Card HOF. If possible, please attach a picture of the card/s you are nonimating. The catagories are 19th Century, Tobacco, early candy and Misc sets. Here is a link to the site so the new people can see what cards are already in http://webpages.charter.net/sabrjay

Obviously, I'm nominating the e92 Nadja Oakes for the caramel catagory.

19th Century - n162 Anson

Misc - Zeenut Fatty Arbuckle

Tobacco - t205 Joss

I'll let the nominations run for 2 weeks, or until nominations stop for a few days if this happens before the 2 weeks are up, and then move on to the actual voting.

Jay

There's only one Christy
That I know at all
One Christy that I ever saw
He's the one who discovered
The fade away ball
And he pitches for Muggsy McGraw

Just a side note. I'd really like see this develope as the best looking cards, not just a bunch of nice cards of HOfers. Pretty much everyone and his brother knows what the key cards from the major sets looks like and many look very good, but I want people to be able to see cards other than what you normally see all the time auction catalogues and price books. I want to see the BEST looking cards, no matter who is on them. Not a bunch of nice cards with recognizable names on them.

This shouldn't be too hard since most of here collect sets and should have plenty of commons to search thru too.

But, if the votes say that you want a bunch of cards of HOFers, then that's the route it will go.

the Hankron memorial add on post.

Think of it like the real HOF. Ignore the name on the card and look at the picture. Would you still want that picture grouped with a bunch of other cards that are considered the best ever? It would be a very easy to set up a special area for the significant and key cards to each set.

I know you all don't believe that the best looking cards all belong to HOFers. I'd like the mantra of teh process be, "would I still pick this card if I didn't know the player?"

In the spirit of providing some off the beaten track alternatives (somewhat like the guy who election after election keeps running for office, even though he doesn't have a shot in hell of winning):

1910 Obak Murphy, Los Angeles--a classic Obak vibrant sky backdrop

T206 Leifield (pitching)--the Christy Mathewson of all common T206's

W503 Heinie Groh--a super sharp full body action batting shot

1911 Zeenut Buck Weaver--the card with the 'tude'

1933 Goudey #142 Paul Richards--a very interesting study of a diminishing angle perspective

To victory!

Brian

Take the FBH Kelly. It is a gorgeous card, but part of it's gorgeousness is that it's Kelly--strikingly handsome, a fine (but hardly the greatest!) player of his time, loved by absolutely everyone, who died because he fell asleep in the snow in an alchoholic stupor.

On the other hand, Leon's nomination...yeah. Great card (love the purle background!)

I'll renominate the Kelly FBH as 19th century card.
T: T3 Speaker
E: CJ Branch Rickey
Misc: 1936 World Wide Gum (Canadian Goudey) Gehrig

Jay - I know you are trying to discourage cards of HOFers etc. but I still feel I should nominate:

N172 OJ -- Ewing & Mascott, Long John Riley & Nick Nicol.

T205 Addie Joss (Memorial card issued after his death)

T202 Cobb/Jennings with the famous Conlan photo of Cobb "sliding"; and

1953 Bowman Color Pee Wee Reese

I am not asking people to pick cards from a vacuum. What am doing is asking them to look beyond the HOFers and key cards to sets. Yes, some of those cards are gorgeous, but there are as many or more cards of common players that look as good or better.

I would like to see the card HOF become a place were people can see more than the cards that always get highlighted in auction catalogues. And you'll get no arguement from me about how gorgeous the Kelly 4BH is. I have been in love with card since I first saw it in 1981 and learned that it was harder to find for sale than a Wagner

Here are 4 of the 5 cards I nominated for consideration in the Baseball Card HOF--1910 Obak of Murphy, Los Angeles, T206 of Liefield, pitching, W503 of Heinie Groh, and 1933 Goudey of Paul Richards. The missing one is the 1911 Zeenut of Buck Weaver, but you probably can check out the one that Leon recently sold on ebay.
