On this date in 1982, Cal Ripken Jr. plated in Game #1 of his historic 2632 consecutive game streak...Here are the lineup cards that resided in home plate umpire's Vic Voltaggio pocket that Sunday afternoon...Note the Blue Jays card was dated (on top) as 1980:

The oldest Dugout lineup card I have is from 1960 (Braves). It's basically just a list of the players on the team in the lineup but does say on top "Duout lineup card". I mostly focus on umpire lineup cards, so I'm not sure whether this represents anything close to the earliest dugout lineup cards, or whether other teams were doing similar at the time. |

Nothing super exciting. Dusty Baker's linup card from a Randy Johnson win vs Cubs in 2004. I just liked all the info he had crammed onto the card.

OTD in 1988, not only did Cal Ripken Jr. hit his 172nd career Home Run but he also played in his 1,000th consecutive game:

I was thrilled to be able to acquire this pair of lineup cards from Game 2 of the 1937 World Series.
The Yankees lineup featured HOFers Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey, Tony Lazzeri and Red Ruffing. Signed by HOF manager Joe McCarthy. The Giants lineup card featured HOF Mel Ott and is signed by manager and HOF Bill Terry. |

Have to get the thread to the top. Base-stealing expert Maury Wills started 1969 with the Montreal Expos, but was soon traded back to the Dodgers. Upon returning to Montreal to play the Expos, Wills (not known as a slugger) hit his one and only career grand slam on August 16, 1969. Although undated, this is the only date this line-up ever appeared in a road game.

Yup, Jeff, from the eBay listings. Since they aren't dated, it takes a bit of leg work to figure out which game they were from. The Wills Line-up card isn't a major find, but I didn't have anything relating to his career in my collection so I was happy to get it.

Been looking for a Pete Rose as the Reds Manager Lineup Card for awhile now, it's a Spring Training Game, but it'll do. This would be Rose's last year as a Player/Manager '86.
Player Manager, '84, '85, '86. Just Manager '87, '88, & '89. Wonder if Pete had a few bucks on this game. Last edited by Shoeless Moe; 11-29-2021 at 04:09 PM. |

A couple more for the evening.
Game 4 of the 1944 World Series. The series was during WWII and was an all-St Louis series, sometimes referred to as "The Trolley Car Series". The Cardinals won the game 5-1 to tie the series at 2 games a piece. They would win the next 2 to win the series in 6 games. The Browns lineup card is signed by manager Luke Sewell. The Cardinals lineup card was filled out by HOF manager Billy Southworth, who left it unsigned. The game is notable because it features Stan Musial's only career World Series home run. Picked up my first lineup cards after reading this and other threads and the interview last year or so with Jeff. Has been a lot of fun. My thought is to find April 15 Dodger lineup cards (Official or unofficial Jackie Robinson Day) or build a small collection with a lineup from each of the Dodger managers--as far back as I can find and afford. Anyone with spares? I'd be interested, as funds allow.
4/15/99 - Davey Johnson 8/28/2020 - Chris Woodward (Rangers) Due to Covid, Jackie Robinson Day plans changed in 2020. The season was not underway in April. The rescheduled JR Day was set to 8/28 in honor of the March of Washington in 1968 and the day Jackie signed with the Dodgers 8/28/1945. The Dodgers were not at home on the new date, but away at Globe Life Field--a foreshadowing of the World Series location. And on this day, Chadwick Boseman died, the actor who famously played Jackie Robinson in the film 42. A fun start!

Fun interview, Jeff! Tom does a great job with the write-ups.
I thought it odd to find Clayton Kershaw's name scratched out on this batting order card. Lo and behold, it was his first career use as a pinch hitter. Not exactly his debut or a no-hitter, but fun to research and discover. Let's keep it going. Only 1.14 million views behind the pennants thread!

This was also signed by Tony Kemp, Lucas Giolito, Matt Olson, Trea Turner, Mark Appel, Aaron Nola and manager Ken Griffey Sr.

A lineup card and a question.
First, the question: What do folks know about MLB authenticated replica lineup cards signed by managers? Were they mass produced? Limited quantities? Just wondering what is known. Thanks. Kershaw's win #4. Finding the game-used lineup card has been easier than finding a ticket stub!

Umpire and Press Box lineup cards from the final game of the 1978 season for the Padres.
The game was significant for a number of reasons:
I bought a lot of Padres-related lineup cards years ago but was unaware of Perry's feat at the time. Maybe a year ago I learned of it, but searching through my collection, could never find these, and worried that I might have sold them. I recently moved, and somehow, they turned up now. Edit: Not sure why they are sideways. The files on my computer are not sideways. Last edited by Topnotchsy; 08-16-2022 at 01:35 AM. |

Great stuff everyone!
I’d like to find a vintage Reds line-up card from late 60s - mid 70s. Here’s one that’s been on eBay for quite a while. I like the fact that it’s very clean, done in pen (not carbon copied) and features the infancy of the Big Red Machine…. https://www.ebay.com/itm/155081976576 But this is outside of my wheelhouse. We can all see what the seller is asking, but can Jeff (or the other experts here) tell me what it’s actually worth? It’s a game that the Reds lost, and I could not see anything of significance that occurred in this game. Thanks for any help the forum can provide! |

First date & 20th anniversary present
Just for fun, here is a completely different way to showcase a dugout lineup card.
My wife Mary and I went to a Tigers baseball game for our 1st date about 33 years ago... They absolutely smoked the Bronx Bombers that day! Our seats were right along the 1st baseline on the railing next to the visitor's bullpen. I still recall HOF Goose Gossage warming up in front of us, huffing and puffing and absolutely making the catcher's mitt pop with every fastball. Ironically, almost 20 years later, I saw that a guy on the East Coast was selling a lot of Tigers dugout cards to games in the same era as our 1st date. I didn't see the dugout card to our game, so I sent the seller a message. I gave him the game date and told him what the personal significance was. Amazingly, he had the dugout card and actually sold it to me for $25!!! Unreal With our 20th anniversary right around the corner, I incorporated the dugout card into a unique gift to my wife that included the dugout card, wedding photos and a business card from a French restaurant that we went to on our 2nd date. This piece sits on the mantel above our fireplace still to this day. Last edited by Scott Garner; 08-16-2022 at 07:49 PM. |

It's been a relatively quiet few months, but I was able to acquire two significant pieces in the last couple of weeks.
This is probably the bigger of the two. Opening Day 1982. Ripken would go on to win Rookie of the Year. And while he had played a few games in 1981, this game featured a number of 1sts: First career multi-hit game (he had 3 hits), 1st career RBI, 1st career extra basehit, 1st career double and 1st career career homerun. The last one is obviously of the most note. Ripken would go on to set the record for most homeruns by a shortstop. |

Lineup card from Jack Morris's 1st career win.
Interestingly, Morris's name never appeared on the lineup from when it was used, since the lineup card only includes hitters, and they had the DH. (The relief pitchers and changes are similarly not mentioned.) Thankfully, the large signature and inscription makes it clear. I do wish they had not messed up on the placement of the JSA sticker. Debating on taking it off and moving it to the back. (Not super worried to have it on the lineup card at all, since I don't think anyone would really suspect it isn't legit.) Edit: Not sure why some pictures get rotated in the upload. Last edited by Topnotchsy; 10-19-2022 at 03:25 PM. |
