Default Early 70s A's Rangers

Found these in my Dad's old 35mm slides. Early 1970s Oakland A's Dynasty playing in Arlington. Love the Reggie one. Enjoy.

Default Recent no-hitter snapshot photo pickups

Johnny Vander Meer on 4/29/43 snapshot in Pittsburgh heading to Forbes Field to pitch.
Vandy and the Reds beat the Buccos and he got the "W" that night.
Vandy loved his smokes and was an avid Marlboro Red pack smoker throughout most of his life.

No-hit pitchers Don Nottebart, Ken Johnson and Ken Holtzman circa 1969.

This photo was likely taken within a few days of Holtzman's no-hitter on 8/19/69 @ Wrigley.
Between the 3 of them they had 4 career no-hitters...

Burt "Happy" Hooten and catcher Randy Hundley after Hooten's no-hitter on 4/16/72 @ Wrigley

Milt Pappas and catcher Randy Hundley after Pappas' near-perfect game on 9/2/72 @ Wrigley.
Pappas walked the final batter of the day and ultimately had to settle for a no-hitter.

Default Snapshot of Junior on July 2, 1997

Here’s a photo from my Dad’s photo album of his youth. In July of 1997 he made a short trip down to San Diego from his native Seattle to visit a good friend of his who was stationed there in the Navy. While he was there he took in at least one Mariners vs Padres game.

The photo didn’t have a date but I was able to start narrowing it down due to the sleeve patches on the Padres jerseys as being 1997 as part of the league-wide celebration in honor of the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier. Then I pulled up starting lineups from each game that season in which the Mariners had traveled to San Diego. The only result was a short, two game series over July 2-3. So, I narrowed it down to two possibilities. I noticed that the second base umpire in the photo looked a lot like Joe West so I referred to the box score, sure enough he was listed as being the second base umpire for the first game of the series on July 2nd. With Griffey as the only Mariner in the shot, I looked at the defensive lineup for San Diego and saw that the first baseman that night, Archi Cianfrocco, was right handed as was the defender in the photo. The next night would find left hander, Wally Joyner, manning first. So after a bit of research I was able to narrow down the photo to a summer night on July 2, in the midst of Junior’s MVP campaign.

Also notable was that Dad had another photo of Randy Johnson staring right at him in the outfield during warmups. Over the course of the night Dad would see five future Hall of Famers and a slew of legends and all-stars play in the game.

Default Big Red Machine in 1977

Here are some snapshots taken of the Big Red Machine at the pinnacle of their glory. These were taken on photo day at Reds Spring Training in 1977. Apparently, there was an option to have film developed back then with a postcard back by a company called "POST-A-PHOTO," as these all have a postcard printed back. I obtained the autographs on the signed ones in person.

Those are great; they look like picture day at Little League! You just needed them kneeling with the bat.

Polaroid also made PC mounts for its early photos (they were so thin that they had to be mounted on something):

Pastrano was champ from 1963-1965, so the photos are no earlier than 1963 and probably no later than 1965.

Wally Berger with the Giants in 1937/1938
Very forgotten player who was an above average ball player.

Through 2022, he was the only player before the 21st century and one of only five players to hit 20 or more home runs in their rookie year before July (1930). And wasn't done again until pujols did it in 2001, 71 years later. Wally hit 38 that season as a rookie.
His career was only a decade long (really only 9 years) And ruined by shoulder and hand injuries. His stat sheet is quite impressive and makes you wonder if he could've been a 500/3000 hitter if he got to play for another 10 years. One of the original what ifs in the game.

Picked up these two Kodachrome snaps of Joe Garagiola.
I personally haven't ever seen a color snap from the 40s of a major leaguer. And hardly any from the 50s. So I was absolutely thrilled to get these!!

Lucas, who's the player in the second photo? He doesn't look like Joe.

Color snapshots seem to become far more common in the early 1960s. I only have two that pre-date 1960: One from the late '40s of some AAGPL players, and one of Frank Leja with the New Orleans Pelicans from 1958 ...

Color film and developing was significantly more expensive than B&W pre-1970s, analogous to long-distance phone calls, enough so to be a consideration in how they both were were used. Anyone from that time can remember well a household member yelling in the background, "Hey, it's long distance!" when one of those calls got too long-winded, meaning more than about five or ten minutes. I grew up comfortably middle class in the 1950s and 60s, but money was tight, you didn't spend any frivolously on anything.

Here are a few you might enjoy seeing - Jess Hill ended up being the athletic director at USC from 57-72. An autographed photo from his playing days is pretty rare I think.

Chris,

I agree it doesn't look like Joe, though I just went through the entire '49 and even the '48 roster and cannot find a closer match.
I'll say, pose, posture and lighting are often deceiving.

Also, Love the aagpbl snap!

Those are sweet pics, Bob. I bet the players were surprised at the names of your kids.

That is a great campy. Lately I've seen quite a few Roy collectors sprout up. He is definitely gaining the steam he deserves.

I recall when cards of Campy and Jackie were roughly the same price, and it was about half of what you paid for a Mays or Aaron. It seems like the values of Campy's cards have a lot of room to grow. He has a great story that goes way beyond his outstanding career, very much like Jackie. I feel the same way about Doby and Minoso, who were no less the players.

Any chance he was mis-identified?

Default Snaps

Love the snapshots and because of that, great more items to pursue, have ventured into Magic Lantern glass slides. The clarity is unreal in these bad boys. Enclosed recent pick up of a 1915 piece depicting White Sox newest manager, Pants Roland. Keep them coming.....

Default No-hit pitcher Bill Singer 1968 snapper

Here is a recent snapper pickup of July 20,1970 no-hit pitcher Bill Singer aka "Sing Sing", likely originating from Camera Day in 1968 at Dodger Stadium.
Many thanks to net54 board member Gary Scamehorn for allowing me to add this bad boy to my advanced collection of no-hit pitcher snapshots.

That's a beaut.
My #1 wanted snap (aside from ones of red)
Is one of Christy. It seems of the early 20th century legends, snaps of Christy are extremely rare. I haven't seen one of him on a field. Do you have him checked off of your no hitter snap list?

I have two snapshots that I believe are the Tulsa Black Oilers. Curious if anyone can tell me more about them. I found the following:

http://www.cnlbr.org/Portals/0/Stand...1919-1926).pdf

...which says there was a Tulsa team without a listed nickname in 1920 along with the Beaumont Black Oilers, so this photo could be players from both teams or in 1923 the Tulsa team's nickname, the Black Oilers, is included so it could be all players from that team with different uniforms.

The photo appears to be from 1957, but it's a bit of a puzzle. The Cardinals jersey Musial is wearing came out in '57, but Ernie Banks is wearing the Cubs cap from 1956. If it's from an all-star game, it would be from 1956, because that's when Harry Simpson played in one. The fact that Don Larsen is there suggests the photo was taken after the 1956 World Series, when he pitched his perfect game. I'm guessing it's from spring of 1957, and the Cubs hadn't yet introduced the one-year cap with white stripes on it.

Default Perfect game pitcher Kenny Rogers snapper

Great signed snapper of The Gambler circa 1993.
Kenny pitched his perfecto on July 28th, 1994 @ TEX.

Thanks to net54 board member Gary Scamehorn for finding this guy for me!

Even though the Orioles lost the '79 World Series in 7 games, the city still held a parade for the team the next day...

Here is a snapshot of shortstop Mark Belanger from that parade:

After the parade concluded the club was all introduced on a stage downtown & after a few speeches a few of the players removed their jerseys and tossed them into the crowd as they walked off.

A (then) young girl caught Belanger's jersey and I was able to acquire it from her directly a few years ago:
