i recently picked up a few 1919 zeenut cards but they're all irregularly sized- i think some of them (if not all) were trimmed. what size are these cards supposed to measure?

Hi Jamie,
According to the 2005 Standard Catalog 1919 Zee-Nuts should measure about 1 3/4 X 3 5/8 sans coupon. Zee-Nuts from 1913-38 had a small coupon at the bottom and these coupons were removed to redeem for prizes. As a result, sizes from top to bottom can vary depending on where on the card the coupon was trimmed or torn off. It's estimated that something like less then 1 or 2% of all Zee-Nuts still retain the coupon.

The SCD Standard Catalog inaccurately lists the size of a 1919 Zeenut card without a coupon as 1-3/4" x 3-5/8". This is actually the approximate size of a complete 1919 Zeenut with coupon. A 1919 without coupon should measure around 1-3/4" to 1-13/16" wide, and around 3-1/8" to 3-1/4" tall, though I find ones even a little under 3" to be perfectly suitable. The heighth is what normally will vary, as Adam mentioned, because the coupons on the bottom of these cards were normally removed by kids rather inaccurately.

You almost have to view the heighth of coupon-less Zeenuts like you would a strip card--the thing was likely torn off, and may have been 'evened' out along the bottom at some point. Either you accept this fact, or if not, you shouldn't even bother to collect them.

I would estimate the percentage of Zeenuts with coupons versus the general Zeenut population to be under 1%--the prizes the coupons were redeemed for must have been really desirable to kids.

Brian
