Default E94 and E98 Color Variations

How many color variations are there for EACH card in these sets?

Also - please post individual cards with as many background colors as you have.

For example, Bob just got his sixth Byrne E94 Card. Bob - can you post all six?

Are there any other E-card sets with different colors in the backgrounds?

I was just reading the E94 Speaker description in the REA catalog and it says that there are 7 color variations for E94. It also says that the Speaker is Gold.

How many people believe that there are 7 color variations for E94 rather than 6? and what is the 7th?

Is that Speaker gold or is it orange or is it a faded red? Tbob and BCD opinions?

i'm still not convinced there's an orange back on the e94s, same as there's no t206 orange cobb. i haven't seen enough of each examples (unlink the pink/red e90-1 keeler) to sway my opinion from freak printing/variation.

I agree with Richard on the REA Speaker. It almost looks like a copper color. I've never seen one quite like that . Sure doesn't look gold though.

Great set of Youngs --- I was always under the impression there were 6 colors and also thinking the gold
was the "short" color of the bunch ----- interesting post ---

Great cards. I have a Detroit checklist book from 1983 that lists:

Red, Purple, Yellow, Aqua, Light green and Dark green. No cards though.

Rob, That is a cool image and one that is used for the E93, E94 and E98 set. I believe one of the auctions currently has a photo with that image for sale, but I am not sure whether it is the original used for the cards.

Here are four of the six E94 colors for Ty Cobb. If anyone out there has an Olive or Gold Cobb for sale or for trade, please let me know.

Guys, I also saw the Speaker being listed as "gold" and it absolutely is NOT. I have a gold Speaker and the gold background is exactly like the gold background Pete posted above on his Young. That mystery color is orange. Now before you jump to the conclusion that it is merely a faded red or a missing color in the process, I have to relate a story.
About 4 years ago Brian Daniels asked me about the value of an orange Cobb in the E94 set. I assumed he was mistaken and pointed out he had an E98, not an E94. Brian then insisted it was an E94, I said no way, etc. About 2 years later Brian sent me a scan of several beautiful E94s, violets, golds, blues and .....oranges! All PSA 6s or better. The orange ones included Speaker, Cobb, Jennings and several others. I was shocked but there they were. I ended up buying a PSA 6 Devore orange. The orange background on the Devore exactly matches the orange background on the other orange cards. The last collector to utter disbelief was my buddy Pete C., he of the scan above. Pete asked me to bring it to the National, which I did. He checked the card out and I finally got him to admit that he just wasn't sure, not a positive response but not a negative one either. Everyone else I have showed the card to has told me that yes it is orange, yes it is real, and yes, they have no clue as to its origins at the printer.
Bottom line, ruling out that any collector would be idiotic enough to take a gorgeous E94 and alter the color to a color which supposedly doesn't exist, and judging by the fact that there are only, literally a handful of these around, you have to think that maybe the original plan was to go with orange as one of the six colors but the orange just didn't look good enough or perhaps there were supposed to be 7 colors but the orange was eliminated for economic or perhaps numerical reasons. I don't know. I do know orange E94s exist.

my original message in the thread was about the obviously orange speaker in REA. Again I feel it should not be counted as a legit back only because there are less than a handful examples known. I also don't know what happened to the printer that day, but e94s only have 6 backs (you should be thankful for that fact tbob).

First e90-3 hofnlans, now orange e94s...what's next?

also if close candy was even contemplating the orange back and eventually dropped it, that's a smart choice as I've always disliked orange (e93s/e98s) as they're so dull and bland and add nothing to the beauty of these caramels.

I don't have any e94's. I have 4 e98's, Red background - Lajoie and Tinker, and Orange background - Bender and Brown. I'd love to get some more Caramels !

And Bob, do you have any low low grade caramels for sale ?

Quan,
Are you trying to tell me this is not a beautiful card? The orange is awesome. Much better than the similar T206.

So, if Lifson believes that there are 7 colors, and the 7th color is supposedly Orange (although I am in agreement with Quan that there are only 6), then why did Lifson say that the Speaker is Gold and not Orange? Perhaps his notation of 7 colors was an error?

To answer the other part of the original question:

There are a few sets that have color variations:

E98 Blue, Red, Orange, and Green
E94 Olive, Blue (sometimes called Turquoise or Aqua), Red, Green, Purple, and Gold (yellow).
E99 Blue, Green, Yellow, and Purple
E100 Yellow, Red, Green, and Blue
E97 Color, No color

There are other color caramel issues that have different color backgrounds that are printing errors such as e90-3, but these weren't intended.

If you can take looking at some lower grade examples, here's a link to my e98 color variations. I love this set. (Quan...orange can be non-bland). Notice the difference between the shades of the orange e98s.

Those are very nice Bob, but I think the background color on those E94 cards are just printing errors. No different than when we find some T206 cards where the red background looks orange instead of red.

I agree Wes,

Although I must say that contrary to T206, printing errors that involve color are VERY uncommon with E98 and E94 to the extent in which the card actually displays as a different color. In fact, these are the only cards I have seen that present like this. But then again, it doesn't take much to turn red into orange. Blue E94s often come in slightly different shades, but wow those orange examples do make me kind of curious. They present as if they were intended to be orange. Either way, those are awesome Bob.

Robert

Nope, it's real. I was wondering what everyone thought of it. It isn't just a faded color either because the player's colors aren't faded for the most part. I guess a printing error ? Has anyone ever seen an E issue with a printing error resulting in an all gray background ?

There was actually a PSA 7 orange E94 Cobb that sold in Mastro approximately eighteen months ago. That was the only orange-looking Cobb I have seen. At that time I thought it was just an unfinished or faded red card.

Richard,
That is cool. That Cobb looks more truly orange than the other cards posted above. It looks intentionally orange. Are you sure it is not an E93?
