Probably didn't want to give them free advertisement. |

I would think that the majority of ESPN readers would know Mickey Mantle, but I'm not sure more than 10% of them would know a SGC 96 from a CSA 10. I'm not sure it was a sleight more than ESPN was trimming down to what interested them. |

The story was picked up from Associated Press. I don't imagine AP could tell the difference either. |

AP is writing for a general audience, most of whom have no interest in graded sports cards. The photo was likely cropped to best show the card itself for a variety of published formats. |

SGC missed a free opportunity to display itself to the world....they should have written and submitted the story themselves to be picked up. |

At least ESPN is emphasizing the card. Much better than advertising the holder. |

Without the holder, there is no way the card sells for that much. |

Report the card, not the holder. |

While I totally agree with buy the card not the grade \ holder. Its safe to say without an SGC 96 associated with the card it doesn't sell for $160k. That is part of the news; part of the story, SGC got robbed.... |

It's a quick general interest story, with most readers likely not being baseball card collectors. Don't take the omission too seriously. |

It should have mentioned it was an SGC mint grade. That's where much of the value comes from. Any estimates on what this card would have sold for raw? It skews reality. Now the baseball card novice thinks a nice looking raw 51 Mantle is a six figure card! |

There was an older guy with a cardshop nearby about 6 years ago who was selling a raw '51 Bowman Mantle. However, he was selling it for somewhere in the five figure range because he said it would definitly grade high. Not in a holder at all, just selling it like it was based on what he thought. |
