Default 1957 Topps Baseball ... color tint?

I am familiar with the "green tint" for 1962 Topps, and I vaguely recall reading/hearing something regarding 57 Topps .... is there a similar tint for some 57 Topps examples? I may guess that this was a new photographic process for Topps, in addition to the size difference.

So, it seems to me that some cards seem to have some different (vibrant) color to them, even though it is the same player. There was a recent thread with a Mantle, and the card pictured is a much better example (from a color/registration standpoint) than other Mantles I have seen.

Any info?

Default 1957

As far as I know, 1957 was Topps first foray into actual color photos . Bowman had tried in 1953 but experienced a cost disaster. The 57 Topps set is often criticized for it's drab and dark look. I like it, but many think it too murky in it's look. I have not heard before it suggested there were two different types of print runs that year

In my experience there are definitely cards of some players e.g. Mantle that look more green and others that look more brown. Ted Williams is another one.

Thanks, Al.

I like the set as well, and it is one of my favorite Topps issues. Some of the "darker" cards, like Mantle, do appear brighter on some examples. Not quite sure why that is ....

A good example, Peter.

There is clearly a difference.

Mantles. A little bit here is perhaps the scan but not nearly all of it.

I agree that in the comparison above some of it is the scan, but there is something more to it ... some cards simply have a "glow" to them, for lack of a better way to put it.

The Mantle above is one of those examples. Even if the 5.5 example had a better scan, there would still be an obvious difference imo.

Is it me; or is the border whiter on the green tints as well?

This begs the question; are all 57's available in two forms? Even the commons?
Why would this not be a "collectible" difference re: the Green Tints so prominently discussed and collected with the 62's.
Weird.

not just you, it appears to be that way .... if "green tint" is the proper way to describe. If not, what is? There is definitely something here.

Perhaps this is how "green tint variation" on the 62 Topps was discovered and classified as such - collectors simply talking about it.

What tint would you call this?
In my hand this one has a whiter than white border and bright registration.
I do own this card.

Nice to see this post back up in the top few ... there has to be some information out there regarding this issue and the obvious tints/shades/etc. for this set

Thanks

Default Brown vs Green versions...

I have had both the brown and green versions of the 57 Mays...and the white borders have a noticeable brown tint on the brown variation. I sold the 57 Mays PSA-8 (brown version) and bought the 57 Mays (green version) psa-8.5. I much prefer the green version to the brown version...it is much brighter.
