Default 1920's Integrated Team Photo ID Help Needed

Just purchased this photo and was hoping someone could help me with some questions I have about it.

The photo has what looks like a date on the front which seems to say 1928. Does the equipment in the photo corroborate this date?

Does the one African American gentleman look familiar to anyone?

The only info that I have is that the photo came from a box that had Rutgers University items in it.

Sorry about the photo quality. The photo is behind glass.

Thanks for any help.

If you have not already compared him to Paul Robeson, you should, I am very bad at comparisons.

I thought about that but in 1928, Robeson would have been around 30 years old.

Tom - equipment appears consistent with 1928. Funny thing is I was thinking Rutgers when I saw the "R", before I even read your post.

The "Baisley" or "Baisleys" stamp above the date should be a clue.
Here's something, although of course we can't say for certain there's a connection:
http://www.newstimes.com/local/artic...in-2190850.php
There's a stamp/signature on one photo there (third thumbnail from the left) which is sorta kinda maybe somewhat similar
to that on your photo, although how much that might have changed in fifteen or twenty years is open to conjecture...

If Rutgers is near your neck of the woods, it might be worth it to go there and look in the old yearbooks for that picture.

Jersey on the guy in the middle row second from left says "Brewster" which is a town in NY about 10 miles east of Danbury CT where a photographer named Baisley plied his trade from 1898 to 1944. Am guessing it's a town team around there. The "R" might be a letter sweater from one of the high schools in the vicinity or, who knows, maybe he might have played at Rutgers. Guy in the front row at right is wearing a pair of the round "Harold Lloyd" style glasses which were popular in the twenties so 1928 may well be the correct year (although it's hard to read). Neat photo.

Thank you to everyone for your help. I have contacted the historical society in Danbury CT in hopes that someone there might be able to answer my questions...or at least keep me hot on the trail.
