1936 Detroit Times Sport Stamp

I happened to find these in an old scrapbook that was handed down to me by my father. Not a lot of info on these out there. Very few sales, very few graded cards. And all the examples are of singles, not the paired examples I have. Does anyone have any info on these, maybe a checklist? Is there any collector interest ?

I believe the set is catalogued in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards. The Ruth is worth several hundred dollars at least and I believe all the major graders holder these.

Would you folks say it's better to keep as a panel if I want to get this graded?

PSA has a few graded panels in their registry from this set.

1) Would your Ruth get a number grade by itself? Does it have full borders on the right and bottom? The top and left side could be cut to the right dimensions.
2) If you got it graded as a panel, it could then also be added to the Babe Ruth Master Set registry. However, it doesn't look like there are a lot of players trying to actually complete the set.

I researched this set years ago. I will be able to provide a checklist later of what I know exists. It may not be complete since I'm missing a few newspapers from 1936. At this time I can confirm 44 different baseball subjects + 6 variations for a total of 50. They came in doubles, but it appears at times ( AT LEAST ONCE) they were issued in a group of 12 ( thus creating the 12 variations I know of). The total number of all possible stamps including variations at this time is 104. I'm sure their may be a few more. I've seen some others but can't confirm they were issued in 1936. Below is the list I compiled from the 1936 Detroit Times Newspapers. I was unable to find the following Sunday issues ( July 12,19,26, Aug 2, 9, and 16),therefore the checklist may not be complete. I found 104 ( 92 different subjects and the 12 variations). All were issued as doubles except the 12 ct. that was issued in the Sunday June 28th edition that crerated the variations.
I have seen online a Carl Hubbell and a double of Bill Dickey/Maxie Rosenbloom but I can't confirm a 1936 date. The bio's on these indicate stats thru the 1934 season only, and I have never seen them in the 1936 papers.

Thanks for posting that Mike. I have scans of 22 of these stamps, with several pairs. The Hubbell is paired with boxer Lou Ambers, whose storyline reads that he recently dethroned Tony Canzoneri as lightweight champion of the world. A google search shows that Ambers beat Canzoneri on 9/03/1936, having lost to him the preceding year on May 10, 1935. And yes, Hubbell's stats from "last season" show his 1934 record of 21-12. So they either got the fight result wrong in '35 or failed to get correct baseball stats for use in 1936, although Hubbell was 23-12 in 1935, so maybe just a typo. My guess it's a 1936 issue, although my scan has no date.

BTW and has been posted at various times by others over the years, these "stamps" appeared in a variety of newspapers throughout the country circa 1936. Here are the only two pairs I own, from the Los Angeles Examiner-- note they can come in either horizontal or vertical format.

Great stuff and information. Here are a pair of Joe Louis stamps:



This one says he's 21 years old. Louis was born May 13, 1914, so he would have been 21 until May 13, 1936. The last of the three bouts mentioned took place on 9/24/35.



This one mentions his loss to Max Schmeling. That was June 19, 1936.



This DiMaggio mentions his first month with the Yankees. That would be 1936.

That makes sense given the write-up on Louis.

As I have never seen an uncut pair, I would keep them together given the choice.

As my previous post listed, the 1936 Detroit Times Stamps started on June 22, 1936 and the last I found was Aug 17th, 1936. I did not find any from Aug 18 - Sept 7th and I stopped there assuming this was the end of the series. So the Hubbell-Ambers and the Dickey/Rosenbloom may have been added after this date. Makes sense with the Ambers bio fight 9-3 and Hubbell and Dickey facing off in the 1936 World Series from 9/30 to 10-6. This would make the checklist currently at 96 different with 108 total. Baseball subjects 46 + 6 = 52.
If anyone can add to the Detroit Times checklist, please let me know.

Thanks Mike. Great job on the checklist. No Dickey or Hubbell but I have a few of these pairings. Not sure how to date these without the entire paper but I did come across a version not on your list: Bronco Nagurski/Olin Dutra. A great photo of Bronco! And a great line: "without a peer as a line plunger"
