Default 68 Ryan - Which one to trade?

So working a deal with my brother who is finishing his 65 Topps set and will be moving to the 68s...and I have two Ryans I can part with...Might as well pick the big one off first...

It's my brother so I could care less, but thought it would be fun to post here as I know there are MANY different opinions on which one would be the one to trade, and the one to keep.

Ryan #1 - Obvious OC, sharp corners, great gloss. I popped it from an SGC 40 3 a couple of years ago.

Ryan #2 - Better center, soft corners, duller but blends nice with other 68s. Has a TINY wrinkle on front side by Ryan face (can't see in pic) that is only about 1/4th inch to border. Picked this one up many years ago from a card shop ($50).

Which do you keep, which do you trade?? This is a great example of what appeals to each...

For my personal collection (raw in binders, where I build sets), I would keep #2.

#1 probably has more value in the market, for whatever that is worth. But for me that would be a win-win. The one I like is cheaper.

Edit: I do like relatively centered cards. Not a stickler by any means, but #1 would drive me nuts sooner or later....

It may be just the scan, but are either of those the Milton Bradley versions, perchance? Looks a little yellowy back there, but they probably aren't.

If you want to hold onto one just to have it in your collection (and no other motive?), then you're better off keeping the O/C guy, because you'll get a heckuva lot more in trade for the more centered, non-miscut one.

I would keep the top one because of the better color and I like miscuts.

Frankish...as much as I don't mind OC, sometimes they do end up driving me nuts too...i've replaced a few here and there...but I do like sharp corners!

Darren...I don't know on MB...I would think SGC would have noted it on the OC card? I know I have a couple in my set (verified by reading here on net54) but I can't tell on these and don't know enough.

bnorth...I am going to keep the top one for the reasons you described...you should see my Schmidt rookie...haha...could cut glass, and JUST a bit...haha, ok more than just a bit miscut...

The "centered" one is pretty badly off center top to bottom. I would keep the miscut and trade/sell the low grade one to someone who thinks it is centered.

I personally do not think so. If the miscut one with the brighter yellow back was a MB, there would be a white strip along Koosman's edge of the card - this one doesn't have that.

It's a tough choice. But when it comes to my brother and me, I would let him choose the one he wants and keep the other.

The L/R centering being bad bothers me a lot more with card #1 than the T/B centering does with card #2 (which obviously isn't as bad anyway) since the card has a horizontal layout. I would keep #2.

I don't mind mildy OC cards, but that top one is miscut. To me that is a no brainer - keep the better centered one if the only flaw is a wrinkle that is difficult to see.

This is just me, of course. Many people dig miscuts and oddities like that, so keep the one you truly like more and damn what anyone else thinks about it. Wonderful cards!

It could depend what you are attempting to trade it for-What's your bro offering in trade?

I prefer cards that look like they did when they came out of the pack, so I like #1 despite its less than stellar centering.

That.

I'm more excited for him to tackle the 68s and give him the Ryan than actually getting something back...

Another reason to love the hobby, it's great seeing each person's view and having their own opinion.

I personally like each one for different reasons.

He is my younger brother and usually always gets the best of me...haha.

Back in 1991ish I had a really nice 1961 Roger Maris...an accountant friend of mine HAD to have it, and I wasn't in the market to sell (still pre-internet, wasn't easy to get a card like that!). I still remember the call where he begged me to sell...I said, what do you have in trade? He said, I have a 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan they are calling a rookie, and a Jordan signed SI magazine I personally got in an elevator. I wasn't interested. (I know...). I told my brother about my crazy friend and he INSISTED I do the trade...not for the Fleer card, but the autographed magazine. I said then I want your 1965 Pete Rose...done deal. We pulled the three way trade...everyone was happy...

We just talked about that trade...he STILL has the magazine...I have a couple of 65 Roses, but not that one...the 86 Fleer card? He turned around and traded it for a used pair of Air Jordan shoes...that he wore out long ago. Wish we still had the "forgotten in the deal" Jordan card!!!
