Default PSA Question re: "MK" Qualified

Posted By: Cobby33

I'm (still) involved in a transaction for a higher-end T206. It's graded PSA 1 and has a rubber stamp on the back. After reviewing the scan, PSA "suggested" that it may have gotten a 3 "MK," but since the submitter didn't request a qualifier, it was given a straight 1.

Any opinions on what's better-- a 1 w/ no qualifier or possibly a higher grade with a qualifier?

Thanks much!

Default PSA Question re: "MK" Qualified

Why not have a qualifier for creasing or back damage or corner wear? All PSA graded cards could be 10's, but with qualifiers. Like, 10 (CR) for creasing.

Try going with SGC -- they will grade your card based on the cards condition, including stamps on the back.

Default PSA Question re: "MK" Qualified

Posted By: pete

i guess it depends on how big or bad the stamp is and if its a big name or not...i have a cy young card that has a small pen mark on the back and im sending it to SGC so i can have it placed into a holder, at least for the authentication sake of it if i ever resell it...

as a matter of fact, i know this is your post but along the same lines ....but does SGC have a standard grade if there are marks of any kind??? does it automatically get a 20/1.5 ??? unlike PSA they have the qualifier grades...

If you stick with PSA then I'd just take the qualifier because the defect will be fairly obvious when people see the card. A "3" does look (and sound) better than a "1".

Default PSA Question re: "MK" Qualified

So why is there a PSA 1 MK grade? I've seen them before. They can give an unqualified "1" and ignore the mark if the card is nice enough? Okay, whatever.

To answer your question, get it graded as a PSA 3 MK. SGC is a good option too, but it will likely come back as an SGC 20 (Fair 1.5).

MK qualifiers are useful in describing the card. I hate getting cards in the mail that look nice in scans but are graded lower becase of a big "X" written on the back.

Default PSA Question re: "MK" Qualified

It was my understanding that PSA always gave the MK qualifier on a card regardless of if the submitter requested qualifiers or no qualifiers. It is the only qualifier that PSA requires to be present at all times. That is why you see PSA 1 (mk)'s.

In addition, I thought that the default was that PSA would grade all cards with qualifiers unless "no qualifiers" was explicitly requested. Not the other way around. At least this has been my experience.

Default PSA Question re: "MK" Qualified

An sgc card with a mark other than toy town or old put stamp (and maybe a few other generally recognized marks/stamps) will usually not receive a grade higher than a 30. This was once a psa 4(mk). For what its worth, I think most collectors generally discount any marked card two grades.

Default PSA Question re: "MK" Qualified

I'm with Josh; i've had some top drawer cards that easily merit 6 or better come back with the 30 grade time and time
again.
usually if it's a stamp or a minor mark, i just don't worry about the grade.
i must admit that the psa mk qualifier thing does appeal to
me a bit when i have the super cards that turn out to be
graded GOOD 30. i still haven't gone that direction because another part of me thinks about the ole slippery slope where
qualifiers could be offered for creases, rounded corners, etc.
Bottom line is the MK has ended up meaning grade offered
minus a couple of grades from us critics, so why mess with the MK. IMHO

best

barry

Josh, you should send the Young into PSA where it will be a 4.

That Dahlen is mine. This is part of the reason I initially posted my question. Seems like you never know what you'll get!
