Default Rarely Seen full set in Clean Sweep auction

The T203 set is an interesting set. I have started it about 4 times but find myself selling singles when someone needs them. I like the set but it just doesn't give me the feeling of being baseball. I think it is available in 2 different backs as well. I must admit, I haven't seen this offered as a full set in a long time though singles do pop up from time to time on ebay. Dan.

Thanks for the heads up. The write up says:

"This has toning on the edges from onetime display in frame and is on sturdy paper stock"

To me the edges look like very fake(d) toning.....

edited to add my reasoning for the issue with the above quote...If it were in a frame for 50 yrs, or more, you would most likely see the outline of the frame around the piece....that is what happens when something is protected like that, from my experience anyway...

and edited an inflammatory remark...

That is commendable of you......As an auction house I would do the same thing AT LEAST until I could be positive it is good....take care

Good to see it was pulled. Here's one on Ebay right now with a Buy It Now of 10 bucks.

There is also a similar looking larger sized poster that's been floating around for years.

There is no actual poster or broadside from the actual time period that looks like this. I said reproduction earlier but it's more a fantasy piece. I believe these were offered for sale in boxing magazines in the 1980's or so. I'll have to save the ad to my files next time I come across it.

Most have that toning look. I've even seen some people offer the larger sized poster on Ebay with burnt and torn edges to make it seem old.

Clean Sweep is not the first to make this mistake so I don't blame them.

Actually I commend Steve for seeing this board, respecting it enough to pull the lot, and then posting a response here. Good show Steve.

Good point, Dan.

Being an eternal optimist, I envision a day when semi-major and major auction houses do the legwork and research before offering an item for sale, rather than waiting until its questionable authenticity is pointed out in a public forum.

Cue Supertramp: "Dreamer, I'm nothing but a dreamer."

That would take an amazing amount of resources and time and would probably result in them not accepting many items. No one knows everything about everything.

Now take Mastro Auctions where I alerted them about the fake Nodgrass that was PSA graded. They had a reputable 3rd party service ok that bogus card and actually review it a 2nd time and stand behind it.

Obviously every lot doesn't require research. But when Steve posts "we are researching this and have heard information either way on it," that leads me to believe there were questions before its authenticity was raised in this thread.

So though I suppose it's commendable that the lot was pulled after it was "outed" publicly, if the auction house was in the midst of researching the item, is it too much to ask for them to be sure before offering the item for sale?

Apparently, yes, it is too much to expect.

I do see your point but I agree with Dan "big daddy" Mckee that this happens from time to time. It is nice to see Steve address the issue clearly here with folks on the board. I have never had any issues dealing with Steve and look forward to bidding in his auctions.

Toby

OK, fair enough.

But if we're going to have a group hug, then be sure to include Pugilistica_Dave, who started the process of having the bogus item pulled.

And I suppose if anyone else spots any questionable items, Clean Sweep would appreciate your knowledge.

I love the first line of the description.

"Incredibly rare issue is unknown to most collectors of the issue."

Topps did in the 1960s where they said something like "this 17 year old righthander is only 18 years old."
