Default Chantilly Show

Is this show worth traveling to? Any thoughts on the pre war offerings?

Depends on how far you have to travel. If you're in other parts of Virginia or a neighboring state, sure, it's worth a few hour car drive. If you live farther away, not really. It's nowhere near the size of a show like the National.

I'd say the dealers can be broken down into thirds. One third is vintage/pre-war. One third is modern. One third is autographs.

Not a bad show. Taking my ten year old with me again (Sunday). He likes new football cards and I'll look around for some stuff I need and drop off 60+ card submission to SGC.

It's about 4 hours for me and I usually go...probably 2 our of 3 on average. It is not like the national, but IMO it is in the next rung down. On an average show, I spend a couple hundred bucks...technically, it may not be worth going, but I do enjoy meeting other collectors and every once in a great while I trip across something special. If you are working on something like a 1961 Topps set, you will have great luck. I have picked up a couple of ts over the years, but nothing I couldn't have found on the boards.

The autograph guests are very good through are seeming to lack variety. I think it's a simple matter of that they have found something that works for them. I don't really do autos, but i often find someone in the forward area I would like to meet. Claude Osteen was there a couple of shows back and I remember his career pretty fondly and had a nice chat.

It's a good show, though. I would recommend it if you like the whole vibe. But if you are going expecting you will get things for less than you pay off ebay...well, it happens, but not a lot unless you are into junk wax or sets.

The Chantilly show is very heavy on autographs and autograph dealers. Many, if not all of the vintage card dealers have stopped setting up at this show. There is still some vintage material, just not as much as in the past.

Friday is the best day to go. Admission is free and the real collectors are there on Friday and much of the crowd on Sat & Sun goes for the autograph guests.

The show has within the last year been sold to a group of 5 promoters. Time will tell to see if the show will be any different (more autograph guests, more shiny stuff, etc,...) than it had been with the old promoter.

+1

I normally take off work early and get there around 2-3pm, but not all dealers are set up by then. I think this year I'll go later Friday and maybe on the weekend.

Default Chantilly dealer

There are many vintage dealers on this's board who set up At the Chantilly show! I am one,,,,Larrie Dean of Dean's House of Cards (NOT Dean's Cards)! I will be at my usual location....the back long row. Please stop by and at least say hello! We primarily sell vintage. Additional pre-war material has been picked up since the National even though my wife, Mary, and I have been enjoying a very nice trip to Europe!

I normally find a couple of prewars to pick up. I'm planning to be there Friday evening.

I attended this afternoon and picked up several Obaks, E90-1s, E95, some assorted 30s Rs, and a 1915 Zeenut. There were lots of T205, T206, T207 and T3s especially.

I stopped in briefly this afternoon on my way to another appointment. A lot of the same stuff as always, but there did seem to be a lot more quality T206s than I'd ever seen there.

Good to see Ken and Val! Sorry I couldn't chat longer.

Default going Sunday

I will be there Sunday with my son and two of his friends. Will likely wear my ultra-rare John McLaren game worn Nationals jersey (#8).

I have a nice stack of T206s to drop off to SGC, but maybe I'll take the rounds for some more before submitting.

I went to the show again Saturday afternoon and it was DEAD! Lowest turnout I've ever seen at Chantilly. I spoke to several dealers and I over heard most saying there simply wasn't anyone at the show - very slow traffic, poor sales. Some traffic first thing in the morning, but they all told me it was very short lived.

Personally, I'm betting the government shutdown is having a real impact given how many folks in this area are out of work.

Sorry we won't cross paths this time around. There are a good amount of T206s, graded and raw, so you'll probably find a few you need. Good luck!

Almost pulled the trigger on a nice Paige (raw), but couldn't do it. Dropped off my submission at SGC for my $5 entry. At least the kids got in free. They each dropped about ten bucks. Crowd seemed decent for a rainy Sunday morning from my perspective... but I don't know how to compare it to other Sundays.

Was there this afternoon with another board member.

Was a very NFL-centric show, almost all the signers were football players. Think that's not a great help to baseball sellers.

Outside of that, if I'm shopping for a 1958 Topps that I know can go for ~$10 on a good day, and you have it marked for $50, I'm just not going to even waste my time. And this happens at multiple tables. So, instead, I'll just shop online.

I did get some single postcard toploaders where I don't have to pay shipping. Just didn't see anything today where I'd approach a discussion with a dealer as we'd start too far apart.
