For those of you that are autograph collectors, I'd like to know, is it this authentic? What's this retail for?

I think he has an actual autograph. I only have those three Old Judge cards!
Remember, he was soliciting images for a book a couple of months ago on the Forum. If he DOES have one--I know I've seen one SOMEWHERE--you could send him a scan of that one for comparison.

The item is totally authentic. Rhys (prewarsports) has as much experience, or more, as anybody else in the hobby dealing in vintage autographs. The auctions is absolutely legit. The reasonable price is due only to the rough condition of the autograph, and it being pasted onto another piece of paper, otherwise it would be a lot more. I would feel 100% confident in the autographs he sells.

I do not mean to toot my own horn, but I have bought and sold autographs since 1988 on a large scale, and have never had an autograph returned to me for being fake. I have used all major authentication companies and they have all passed. I deal consistantly with the big authenticators and dealers in the country selling rare signatures. I deal with non-hall of famers quite a bit from the early 20th century and 19th century. I just sold a PSA/DNA authenticated Fred Tenney autograph last week to one of the bigger dealers in the country, and I just posted this week about owning one of only a few authentic Matty McIntyre signatures on this forum etc.

If you would have taken the time to read my discription you would see that I guarantee EVERYTHING I sell to be authentic, and I think you would be hard pressed to find 10 people in the country that have as much experience as I do in this type of collectible.

The affordable price is because of condition, and because Hoy lived to be 99 years old and only died about 40 years ago. Please e mail me with any questions personally about this item if you wish.

Rhys

Rhys - why didn't you have that one authenticated? non-authenticated it's a $70 book, but with the seal of approval it's up toward $1,000.

Prewarsports,

My apologies to you. There was no disrespect meant in my post. I didn't mean to come across as skeptical as I sounded. I'm no expert when it comes to authenticating autographs, but I was a little suprised at the price, thus, the question of authentication.

Again, my apologies.

I am selling the Matty book as unautographed and I specifically state that as such. I deal extensively with non hall-of famers and am very knowledgable with these items of people like Bill Dahlen, Fred Tenney, Tony Mullane, and I have owned a Hal Chase (earlier discussion) etc etc. However, because there are so many forgers out there in the hall of famer market (because of the prevelance of examplars) it is very very tough and even the best authenticators in the world are only right about 80% of the time. I have countless stories of PSA/DNA and the others to stand behind that statistic if you wish to e mail about it. I bought the book from someone who told me the same stories you usually hear and I simply relayed those in the auction. I have owned 2 Mathewson signatures in my life, and have probably seen about 30-40 authentic ones and am no way an expert on his autograph, nor do I hold myself out to be, and I personally do not think this would pass authentication, hence selling it as a book alone, but what do you do? I am not going to throw it in the trash because it is a 1920's Mathewson book, but I am not putting my stamp of approval on the signature and I plainly state that in the auction. I was told by one individual that Mrs. Mathewson began signing items for him late in life and it looks like her writing, but once again I can not verify that either. Runscott, if you feel like it was not clear and that I should add something else to the auction discription then please let me know and I will do so. The last thing I am doing with this auction is trying to trick somebody. And by the way, a signed Mathewson book with authentication is worth more than $1000, but I think your $70 estimate on this book about right and I would be happy with that number.

If anyone else feels like I should change something with this item feel free to let me know via e mail, this really isn't the type thing most vintage baseball card collectors want clogging up the baseball card board, and I will try to make changes you guys feel are necessary if any.

Rhys

Anyone who reads this thread can quite easily get to your auctions and read the descriptions - it's obvious that you were very clear about the item.

But thanks for answering the question. BTW, I would still like a clearer scan of the other item I emailed you about - it's just a matter of bumping it up to about 150 dpi.
