Default A Couple of New Cabinets...

Posted By: Rob L

Picked up these cabinets this month from prewarsports. The first is a Jack Rowe cabinet from 1887 (allegedly) when he was playing for Detroit. The second is Kip Selbach from 1892 (again allegedly) approximately 2 years before he played for Washington. Are the years fairly close?

If you are questioning the accuracy of the cabinet subjects or the year that the cabinets are from why did you buy them? Shouldn't you ask these questions before buying them?

Jay, I was just curious about the years, they were just specifically listed. I did research the players and they were identified correctly. I purchased them because the players were identified which isn't that common for this era.

The cabinet cards were certainly the form of photography at this point in time but, absent a uniform, a pencil ID is very suspect. It may well be identified correctly but, considering all the crooks out there, you never know who might take one of the millions of civilian cabinet cards out there and match it up with a similar looking ballplayer and put a pencil ID to it. It does help if the ID is in pen as the ink from that period of time has usually oxidized into a brown color. There is also a certain style to writing during that time that can help determine if the writing was from that period.

Rob
