Default Roger Maris signed card opinion

An Old-time collector friend of mine sent me a picture of this card he dug out of his collection, wondering if he should spring for authentication. He says he's had it in his collection since the 1980's, but I was setting up at shows in the late 80's, and there were plenty of fakes floating around then to.

I told him I didn't like it and probably shouldn't waste his money...but not being an expert in baseball auto's, I'd pass it by some others.

Sigs I've seen, Roger had a much cleaner autograph. It's possible he had a problem with the pen, and that's why the "R", is so sloppy, but even if it's good, I'd have a hard time thinking an authenticator would like it.

Thanks in advance for any opinions. Sorry, the cell phone picture he sent me isn't great.

Not so sure it is bad. Try to get him to send a clearer pic and post it here.

I agree. Only the "R" looks funky but the rest looks spot on to me.

Did Roger sign right handed or left handed? That certainly looks like it was signed by a right handed person.

Thanks for the opinions guys. Had him try to send me another picture. This one may be slightly better then the last one, but not much.

Do you guys think it might just be a crappy pen Roger was working with?

Worth trying to get authenticated?

Looks like Roger wrote right handed.

I would do a $10 "Quick Opinion" on PSA/DNA or Beckett but you will need a very clear scan or picture to get an opinion. I personally think it is authentic but again the "R" in Roger looks funny. Maybe the card slipped in his hand as he was signing it.

Thanks for the responses. I appreciate it.

My friend also happened to show it to a well known autograph dealer, who supposedly has a connection at PSA who told him it was good.

Guess my 1st impression of it may have been wrong.

I do not claim to be an expert on Maris, but have done some homework when I purchased mine and also had the Quick Opinion done. One thing that really stands out to me on Maris signatures is that his first name from this time frame looks like he wrote Ragu. That stands out to me with this particular piece.

His autograph changed somewhat through the years, as most players autograph did. Here is one of his earliest autographs on a 1957 Cleveland Indians photo album. Yes, it has been certified by JSA. Please do a comparison, but keep in mind it probably changed between 57 and 61.

Here's my only Ragu for comparison, though it's a faded sharpie version. JSA for whatever that's worth.

The big ragu! Looks like the first R was slowly drawn. Unsure
