Cobb/Ruth/Gehrig collection progress, looking for more!

Hi everyone, about 5 years ago I decided to switch from set building to focusing on three players; Ty cobb, Babe Ruth, and Lou Gehrig. This is my updated family photo. Anyone else focus on just a few players? I find helps to have more direction when it comes to collecting, but additions have been tough to come by with the huge price increases.

** With the being said, I am interested in adding a few bucket list cards. Trying to find low grade examples of 1914 Cracker Jack Ty Cobb and 1911 M110 Sporting Life cabinet Ty Cobb. Any leads would be greatly appreciated! Please direct message or email me at cards212121@gmail.com. Thanks!

As others have said, quite the impressive collection. While the huge price increases may have made it tough to add to it, you have so many duplicates of these extra high cost cards that just by selling a few (or perhaps even via the trade route), you should be to obtain the ones you mentioned within a reasonable amount of time.

Among other things, I too collect specific players, including Cobb and Ruth, but also Wagner, Jackson and Eddie Plank. Here are some of my Planks; I am especially fond of Plank T cards bc, like with Wagner, he rarely comes on tobacco issues

nice hoard!!!! I got away from type collecting maybe 8-10 years ago to focus on babe ruth and ty cobb as my main players of focus. I also have binders full of yankees and hof'ers that I like that I prefer to buy/keep raw. And my dots miller run has satisfied my itch for type collecting. Never been happier with my collection although I miss some that I sold along the way for sure!

Unlike you I have a hard type keeping dupes as I inevitably sell/trade them for other different examples I want/need.

Pete, I am glad you sell dupes, otherwise I would have my Blue Bird!

Pete, like many others here, focus on one/several players or all the poses of a single player (i.e., a back run). In many regards it’s an easier way to collect. It’s always satisfying adding a new version to a player collection. Aside from Plank, I pick my players bc I feel as blue chips they are solid places to put some money. However, I have heard a zillion reasons to collect singular players, including they are related, they respect they guy, they were a childhood (or parent’s childhood hero), they liked a pose and then learned about the player and decided to collect more. It’s very interesting what drives someone to choose a specific player to collect.

As an aside, What I cannot get behind, however, is non-playing-days or manager versions of cards. Aside from the 33 Lajoie or Tolteros Gibson, I just have no interest in post-career versions - 1948 leaf Ruth, 33 sport Kings Cobbs, 1940 play ball Jackson. In fact, I generally shy away from late-career versions of players too. I remember looking at the 72 Topps Mays and 1975 Topps Aaron and thinking they looked so old. I don’t have any M101-4/5 Wagners or Cobbs.

Awesome collection/investment group!!! I really like the 1910 Our Home Team and Dietsche team postcards which are super tough to find. One card that would fit nicely into your group would be a nice Gehrig exhibit from the 20s.

I get not wanting cards from after a player’s career or at the tail end of it, but you may want to reconsider an M101-4 Cobb which was made right in the middle of his career. 1917 was one of the most dominant years of his career.

I focus on Ruth playing years solely now as well. It can be tough with the market as you said. I take my time and buy high eye appeal for grade and enjoy the process.

Valid point! However, there are so many early-year Cobb cards, especially if you consider back variations and post cards, that I am happy sticking with earlier issues. Plus, I don’t love the black and white of the M101-4/5s, although I am slowly gaining a greater respect for the various back variations and the oddities of the set. I did have a 1 of 1 1920 Holsum Bread Cobb and I consigned it bc it was too “late career” for me
