Default Question about T206 Price Curve

Posted By: Jared

I've been religiously tracking the final ebay auction prices of some of the more recognizable players (Cobb, Mathewson, etc.) for two months, and I've noticed that the price curve really levels out after an SGC 40/50 (or equivalent). In other words, everyone seems to be paying the same amount regardless if the condition is SGC 10, 20, 30, or 40. Is this normal? Do collectors generally consider any popular T206 worse than "VG" equal?

I'm honestly scratching my head wondering why people are throwing down as much for beater T206 Cobbs as they are for "Good" condition Cobbs.

Is there a reason?

Default Question about T206 Price Curve

Posted By: peter chao

In the lower grades, people are more concerned about the appearance of the card and the condition of other cards in their collection. There are many people who collect T206 in PSA 2 to PSA 4. So when a PSA 3 is auctioned, people are much more concerned with the appearance of the card and will be willing to pay more for a card that presents well. So it is quite possible that a nice PSA 2 will go for more than a PSA 3 that does not present well.

At least that's my two bits.

Default Question about T206 Price Curve

and even participated in the anomoly.

It's largely a function of these amazingly high prices and the ongoing trend upwards. At a point, most hobbyists can only afford to buy in at one level and will spend every dollar they have up to that amount, regardless of the grade if it means they can add the card to their collection. Add $200 to that amount and even though the condition may be exponentially better, they just can't come up with the extra dough - so they just spend all they can to at least partake in the market. Competition is just that tight and people aren't prepared to wait 18 months to add a dearly desired card to their collection.

If a bunch of people all have $600 max to spend (and only a very few have $1000 plus to spend), and a Cobb SGC40 runs $875, then all those buyers will compete for every available 10/20/30 with perhaps premium placed on eye appeal and not so much grade. With higher grades only affordable to a few, the rest of the market has really been squeezed and demand pushes even low condition examples ever upwards.

Hope I made some sense, but if not I'm sure someone will follow me who does .

Daniel

the top players in the T206 get a lot of attention in any grade - so sometimes you will see prices end similar for Hall of Famers.
