Default Baseball Magazine Cover Art

One of my fun items to collect is what I refer to as: Baseball Magazine Cover Art.

The items reflect baseball and some of the most talented artists/illustrators of the day. Here are the 8 baseball magazine covers I own. The earliest one I received today is dated May 8, 1904, and the last one is dated April 15, 1916. Interesting enough they all have some orange/red color, which brings them to life.

Here are the covers in chronological order. They include: The Sunday Magazine, Chicago, Ill May 8 1904, Sunday Record-Herald, "HEADING HIM OFF AT HOME PLATE; "July 28, 1907 Sunday Magazine of the Boston Sunday Post; March 28, 1909 San Francisco Chronicle, "The Catcher, Waiting for a High One" by Hershfield; May 15, 1909 The Saturday Evening Post by J.C. Leyendecker; Oct 1, 1910 The Saturday Evening Post by Robert Robinson; The American Boy, May 1915, "THE FENCE BUSTER" by W.W.Clarke; October 9, 1915 Collier's Magazine by J.C. Leyendecker; and April 15, 1916 Collier's Magazine by Herbert Paus.

Let's see some more Baseball Magazine Cover Art!

Default Volume 3 of the Encyclopedia of Baseball Cards

Not exactly the same type of magazine art, but this is the cover art to Volume 3 of the Encyclopedia of Baseball Cards by Lew Lipset. I purchased directly from Lew Lipset as well as an "Author's copy" of the book.

Hi Patrick

Here's an "oldie, but goodie"....and, one of my favorites. Front cover of the Saturday Evening POST

Here's a real "oldie, but goodie"......but, I don't think it was on the cover of Harper's Weekly. Anyway, I thought it would be of interest.

That cover art is great.
I don't have any cover art but these are "wall" art in my office. They are the same, fairly small size in real life (approx. 10" x 14")

Patrick

I have the first two magazines, and the second is perhaps my favorite image. It was also used for the book cover of Johnson of Lansing by Hawley Williams (pseudonym of William Heyliger).

I've asked this question many times, but given the thousands of magazine covers, pulp covers, book covers: where has all the original art from this era gone? I have probably seen less than ten original paintings. Many more must exist, but where?

Well, this aint vintage, but the subject (Lou Gehrig at Columbia) is.

It's the cover of my new magazine, 21: The Illustrated Journal of Outsider Baseball that comes back from the printer next week. That's all I'll say about it, as this is not an advertisement, I just wanted to share my "vintage inspired" cover art.

That's kind of funny.

Speaking of Tip Top Weekly (which we should probably start a separate thread about) :

I believe there are 986 issues in total (850 of Tip Top, 136 of NEW Tip Top) of which I have catalogued the covers of 947, including 188 baseball themed covers.

I am looking for what is on these covers :
TTW : 3, 6, 14, 15, 22, 32, 65, 73, 74, 86, 131, 156, 272, 315,
NTTW : 3, 7, 42, 44, 62, 65, 69, 75, 78, 79, 81, 82, 83, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 101, 102, 123, 127, 131, 134, 135

I am looking to acquire these issues :
TTW : 102, 282, 313, 318, 425
NTTW : 55, 106

Here is the earliest baseball themed cover issue that I know of...

Default Cover art/ calendar art —original

This is an original circa 1910-1915 oil painting by Griswold Tyng, featuring a catcher’s mask. (I believe there to be a family relationship to James Tyng, but nothing definite yet.). Tyng was a student of Howard Pyle and illustrated books, magazines and calendars .
If anyone has the item this appeared in or on I would love to see it.
Title on the back is, An old timer at the bat”.

Default Great Topic!

The focus of my collection is memorabilia, original baseball art being high on the list. Here are two paintings I have that were the originals used for 1916 Baseball Magazine and 1927 Saturday Evening Post covers, painted by respectively J.F. Kernan, and Alan Stephens Foster, both well known 20th century American illustrators.

Those are fantastic

Default Leyendecker

JC Leyendecker 22x28 lithograph titled, "Is He Safe - Or Out?", that was printed from the original painting that was featured on the cover of the April 1910 issue of The Popular Magazine published by Street & Smith. Litho was produced by Close, Graham and Scully, Inc for Street & Smith and is one of only (2) known in existence, the other is a part of the Leyendecker Collection on file at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This particular lithograph hung in Cleveland Municipal Stadium's Stadium Club Restaurant during the 1970's and was obtained by a former employee of the Stadium Club. Measures a handsome 22" x 28" H and is matted and framed to measure 34" x 40" H.

Default Saturday Evening Post Covers

Somewhat surprised that these got no bids in my recent auction. The complete set of PC 766 Robert Robinson Postcards four Baseball images. Produced by Edward Gross and Curtis Publishing whom were the owners of The Satuday Evening Post, of which Robinson was a long time illustrator. These four images were used on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post in 1910, 1911 and 1912.

A very cool group of postcards. I'd have been on them like a dirty shirt if I didn't already have a set. Surprised to learn that they got no bids, especially because it can't be ruled out that Honus Wagner may have been depicted as the batter.

Default Rockwell's 09/04/1948 Saturday Evening Post Cover

This is a 1973 Portal Publications reprint of the Post's cover entitled "Bottom Of The Ninth". It features local legend Johnny "Bear Tracks" Schmitz on the far right behind the bat boy. Johnny signed this copy at his kitchen table where he signed for anybody came to visit with him. I don't have an original magazine but hope this will fit into the spirit of this thread. I believe that there were two versions of the original painting. One of which went up for auction a few years ago.

Thank you Mr. Postman...

This one fits in very nicely to my collection due to an interesting little nuance in the art work.

Many of you are aware of my proclivity for (addiction to?) collecting Baseball Magazine supplements, so compare the closeup from the artwork with one of the Mathewson m113 versions...

I have some early 1900s magazines with covers from the great illustrators, but I've also collected some of the less common magazines focused on the African-American community. Here are a just a few examples to give you an idea of what I collect. Sorry about the glare in the "Our World" Magazine with Campy, Durocher, and Jackie on the cover...

What a great connection to a set you love! I would never have guessed that pic on the cover was Christy Mathewson! Congrats on an excellent pickup!

Default Bohnert Art

Apologies for skewing somewhat off topic, but at an NSCC in Cleveland quite a few years ago I bought this original art by Herbert Bohnert circa 1930-40’s. It’s roughly 38”x19”. From what I’ve been able to find out, Bohnert was a magazine illustrator. He also apparently did a good bit of adverting work. For instance, this piece could have had a cigarette brand or the name of a beer inserted at the top for publication. I haven’t been able to find out much more about him or this piece and was wondering whether anyone knew more about him or his art. Thank you in advance.
