Default football, goal line/side lines, the same rules?

One last game before end of season, lets talk football and discuss your opinions between the side line and goal line rule differences.

QUESTION: Why is it when a receiver catches a ball across the side lines, but feet in bounds, it is considered in bounds even though the ball broke the side line plane.

But, when the ball crosses the goal line, even though both feet stated in playing field, ball crosses the plane of goal line, thus TD.
Why aren't both lines treated the same?

Should a touchdown be a true touchdown, contact with playing field passed the goal line. (I guess that makes two questions)

Would like to get everyones opinion

HOW ABOUT A CHOICE:

If you had to choose between these two rules, ( treat goal/side lines the same, or make TD a true touchdown), which one would you change?

neat question. Guess I would chose to make the playing field the ONLY legit plane, so a TD isn't a TD unless the field is touched - can't just hold the ball over the line, it must touch or you have to step in the endzone etc.

Rob,
I agree, and in case of a pile of bodies prevent the touching the field for the TD, the bodies actually are an extension of the playing field.
