Default T206 1/1

Saw this pop up on Ebay. Getting some pretty serious views. $3,499 OBO

I hope this doesn't become a trend!

Thoughts? Comments?

Personally I think it's a load of crap! They ruined a perfectly good T206. But not surprising as this is the current state of the hobby...overpriced packs containing intentionally engineered "rarities." It's the lottery/stock market baseball card model.

I'm sure that's the general consensus on a forum like this. I didn't exactly have an issue with cards being encased as a chase card, as long as there was no damage. Actually, in small quantities it could maybe help bring some collectors into the pre-war part of the hobby.

With damaging cards like this, my fear is eventually parallel sets are made: /1 /5 /10 /25 etc where people will be trying to put together complete sets that are stamped

Same price as a centered PSA 4 1941 Play Ball DiMaggio with good color. Pretty easy decision for me.

Purposefully made rarities are something I'm not a fan of, unless I can purchase it for what it's true value is. I forget where I was but recently I purchased a 1 of 1 for $5. Probably exactly what it was truly worth. Now all I have to do is have it graded by BVG and list it for a quarter million and then buy a house with the profits. It's a great little side hustle.

Way to go Topps. Butcher your own cards and leave ones you never produced alone. This card now has less value based on every grading metric that exists.

I can't believe they actually stamped the card like this. And on the front of the card no less. Why not the back at the very least and leave the front clean? What a disaster!

While part of me hopes they only stamped buy backs of commons, I do worry there is a green Cobb floating around or something.

If they want PSA to grade it, it will likely require just T206 with factory information as the set information. So the stamp will count against it, and a MK seems likely. I think it's higher than a 1 though. Either a 1.5(MK) or 2(MK) in my opinion. Oddly enough, a 1.5(MK) scores higher on their set registry scale than a 2(MK) based on this page:
https://www.psacard.com/psasetregistry/rules

I don't think they'll count it as a Topps Buyback T206 in the set info since Topps didn't release a checklist of cards that were inserted as bonuses.

I think it was great that Topps released their Topps T206 product several years back. It introduced alot of new collectors to the classic set and perhaps created new followers. But this time around, with the stamping of original cards as 1/1's, it has ruined the value of the cards under the guise of creating a 'rarer' product. You don't mess with perfection!

I don't really hate this as much as I hate a chopped up, game worn jersey. Topps is just catering to the audience; newer collectors like artificial rarity. Whether I agree with this or not, I can't really fault Topps.

Why couldn't they have just put the cards in those custom card sized holders like they did with the other buybacks and just stamped the cardboard holder instead of the actual card? I don't get it.

How can you blame them? It was just a common card before now it is a 1/1.

Some people are fans of serial killers...

After all, they're just catering to the audience...

Yes, I can fault Topps, just as I do for Pannini who only cuts up stuff for US products. (And Topps for cutting stuff up as well )

Because all the cards in this set were minis; the packs look like cigarette packs. Oversized cards would stick out immediately and be searchable.

Thanks for clarifying John. I didn't know that. Cool idea to have packs the size of old cigarette packs and only have minis in the set. But stamping an original T206 is just not right.

They're not even 1/1's. The stamp doesn't change that the card has thousands of examples that exist.

Well, they're considered stamped buybacks. Of course there are thousands of these cards that are unstamped. But Topps included these as a chase insert in a set which sold 20,000+ packs at $15 each. They might have only inserted 10-20 original T206s with these 1/1 stamps in the entire print run. So it might have taken opening 1000 packs in order to get one of these. It doesn't make it worth thousands, but I could easily see them selling for 5-10x what a regular common in VG shape would cost.
1/1 stamped cards in this release made a couple of weeks ago are selling for $500 each. Many of these collectors have never held a T206. But the ones that get a real T206 card in their packs may sell it, or it may become the first of many in their collection.

Still looks like its just commons. If it's strictly commons, this is pretty decent way to introduce young or new collectors to vintage. A Paddy Livingstone T206 would be something a lot of young collectors have never seen or held. Imagine being 9 and pulling that? I'd be stunned and don't think I'd be able to put it down.

What they have done is ruin a classic card. Common or not.
I have thought long and hard about it and I can't find a reason why I would agree that this was a good idea.

I guess you could do this to any set. Gold stamp it 1/1 and it instantly becomes that. 75 Brett, Yount, etc.
But leave the pre war cards (especially the T206) alone.

But has it been ruined or just repacked? This board is always talking about the future of the hobby and the future of vintage. Paddy Livingstone can do a lot more for that future as a stamped 1/1 inside a modern product than it can as a low-grade common that means nothing to a lot of people.

If you're interested in the future, this is how the future learns these cards even exist.

Original T206 stamped 1/1 or the 1/1 parallel with Ty Cobb back made as part of the parallel set? I haven't seen any mention of an original T206 Cobb buyback on blowout.

Honestly I agree with this. If I was a kid and I pulled something like this I'd be over the moon. Even now, If I pulled something like that I'd be pretty stoked. I think it's a great way to introduce a new group of collectors to vintage and pre war cards.

If you go to the original post #1 and click the link and then click on the far left link on top advertising the Topps T206 series 5 hobby boxes for sale, is where I read it. And yes I can't figure out how to post a link and should've posted that I have not verified this (Cobb 1/1). Just hope no hof pitchers aren't involved.

So, the Ty Cobb mentioned is a fantasy Ty Cobb back?

Yes, it's in the parallels section. Every one of the 250 cards in the set, including Ty Cobb, got a 1/1 Ty Cobb back parallel card. I've been tracking all the ones that showed up on eBay since Series 1. Probably seen 70 different ones so far.

Silliness like this is one of the things that drove me away from modern cards. Topps does stupid stuff like this all too frequently.

I have (probably too) many collecting interests and one of my low key efforts is building the original Allen & Ginter Fans of the Period and Parasol Drill sets.

Check this out:

I get that Topps has nothing to do with what someone asks for on eBay , but raw that is $10-$15 cards. Encasing them like that, and stamping it 1/1 should not increase the value 8x to 12x.

After seeing this thread, I went and found this card on ebay. While it sold as best offer, I about fell over when I saw this because regardless of what it went for, you know it went for WAY too much.
