We have numerous accidents every year in this town, after the festivities. Their rods and cones must be screwed up. Be safe

One of the more famous (or infamous) baseball-related incidents involving Rick Monday and the Stars and Stripes...

Happy 4th to all. Kevin that is one of my favorite pictures; it would have been better if he would spiked each of those punks in the face after he snatched the flag.

I love how Monday ripped that flag from those losers, burner #1 looks like he's still trying to get a light.

A t209-2 Thompson would fit in, can't think of any other cards.

When John Adams was in his final moments, he is purported to have said "Jefferson survives." He was unaware that his old friend and sometime adversary had predeceased him earlier in the day.

Just came back from the Fourth of July parade in Southampton. A great spectacle indeed.

It is truly amazing that July 4, 1826 marked the 50th anniversary of our country, as well as the death of two of our presidents and founding fathers. Certainly a statistical anomaly.

Michael- thanks for the link. The HBO series "John Adams" (which will be repeated today in its entirety) was great and worth watching. It's based on David McCullough's biography of Adams, which I hope to get to someday.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for sharing... Now I know why I keep getting out sniped...
Be well Brian

Hi Barry,
I threw you a changeup and you hit it out.... It's funny how these men who were rivals for so long thought so highly of each other.
Our Founding Fathers were truly remarkable...

Happy 4th to all... Be well Brian

Might not have been me Brian, I've been focusing on other stuff as of late. I find the Masonic connection between the early Presidents very intriguing. The Adams book was good Barry, haven't seen the miniseries yet but hope to at some point.

I "listened" to the book while driving to FL a couple of years ago. It made the trip a breeze. The movie is great as well, Paul Giamatti and the Abigail chick were quite convincing as was the computerized backdrops and scenery. A big thanks Mr McCullough, and for his story on the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge -couldn't put that one down either.

Hey Joe,

They are 19th century(c.1888) trade cards. Sometimes blank, sometimes with advertising of various retailers. They are still reasonable price wise, though they have been going up lately it seems.

Hi Denny,
We are all happy to see you here and we will all be thinking and praying for you when you are gone... Be well Brian

PS Today is such an amazing day for America I hope everyone understands the following words...

Jesse Helms passed away today, and like him or not he treated all of his constituents the same way. I don't care to debate those who would choose to pass judgment on his beliefs; I only want to thank him for his service.

You know I didn't intend to be impertinent concerning Mr. Helms, right Brian? I read he liked being called 'Sen. No.' Just commenting on the fact he died on July 4. Thought we were meeting for lunch last month!
