Default T206 "Header Card" on ebay

Posted By: Rhett Yeakley

Just wanted to let people know that this card being sold on ebay has absolutely nothing to do with the T206 set and was produced in 1916. Not sure what SGC was thinking when they encapsulated it, as it is a T35 "Ask Dad" card produced in 1916 (not 1909-11 like the Slab says), there are 18 slogan cards in the set, and while they aren't the most common cards in the world they certainly have nothing to do with the T206 series. Sorry for outing an ongoing auction, but just didn't want anyone here thinking the item was something it isn't.

Auction:

Rhett...

Why would you think someone in the encapsulating and
grading business would be thinking at the same time
that they were slabbing??

Thanks for posting, lest someone bid a bunch thinking
they were getting a card contemporaneous with the white
border tobacco cards.

Steve,

I think Rhett's concern was that someone
would see "1909-1911 Sweet Caporal" and
immediately think of the white border tobacco
cards.

No, don't get me wrong, I appreciate the heads up. The seller is the one who should be chastised for the misleading description.

Steve, the card itself definately has value and is from an obscure T-set that you don't see every day.

My issue was with both the graders to a lesser extent (not that tough to do a little research before you grade it) and obviously the seller saying it had anything to do with the T206 set specifically. I guess it is a fine line as to what constitutes misleading. I wouldn't have any problems with someone saying something like "this is the same company that produced the t206 set" or something along those lines, but this seller is implying that this was an intended part to the t206 set and that just didn't sit well with me.

I guess it is possible that the seller doesn't know
much about the issue. And when he saw 1909-1911 and
Sweet Caporal, then it seemed related to T206 to him.

That could have happened. Maybe...

I would bet that SGC's software defaults to "1909-1911 Sweet Caporal"

That's what I need. Some software. So if I'm trying to figure
out what a card is I just scan it and click a go button with
the mouse. Zap!!!! Finest kind of card grading and identifying.
With software there's no need for a grader to know what he's
doing. They could get rid of the old, grizzled folks who know
cards; so they could hire some teenagers to do the card grading.

Frank - tongue-in-cheek as your comment was, it raises an interesting discussion. Assuming the software was well programmed, it would theoretically be possible to have a card's surfaces laser scanned and have a precise and repeatable grade assigned by computer.

If PSA had misdated the card this thread would have 50 posts already.

PSA only puts "T206" on its T206 card labels and does not try to identify the year of issue. SGC puts 1909 for Series 150 Sweet Caps but leaves 1909-11 for T206 backs it can't date (i.e., Polar Bear or Old Mill). So, because SGC puts more data on its flips than PSA, it gets this one wrong. Thus, it is PSA's fault.

Nice analogy Paul.   Do you think we can put the price of gas at PSA's doorstep also???

Oil is used to make plastics, which is the lifeblood of PSA. There recent addition of half point grades has caused numerous resubmissions, necessitating the use of thousands if not millions of additional slabs, thus causing a spike in demand for plastic, resulting in a spike in demand for oil and higher gas prices.
