I have personally never seen it as a card in the hobby.

Are you referring to the Seaver photo on top of the box?

Yes, it was used in the 70’ Super set. Not the actual card, only the photo.

I'm a Seaver collector, and I've never seen one. I've always wondered if Topps actually made a mock up card and took a picture of it for the box, or if they just printed up the box without making a mock up card.

Thanks for the input on the Seaver Super Photo.

I think the only known 1970 non-issued proof photo was the Phil Roof change (I believe that was 1970)

I wonder why they changed it (seems like a good photo for a card).....maybe someone at Topps wanted 68-69-70 to all be a similar presidential head shot photo of Tom?

Advertising material often differs from actual product specifics. I highly doubt Topps employees looked up a players previous cards and carefully selected images for the next set each year, but Seaver was originally designed with a pitching pose in 1968. He and Bob Gibson both posed throwing with the wrong hand; some pre-production examples are known of both. Both pranksters got a portrait shot in the final set, presumably as a result of the trick.

According to Keith Olbermann there are three other known 1970 Topps proofs with different photos than the issued cards, Danny Cater, Dick Selma, and Gerry Nyman. I would pay $20 just to see a pic of the Dick Selma in a Cubs uniform.

I was only able to find the photo of the Phil Roof Proof (top middle) from an old REA auction

1970 cloth version of Dennis Higgins (below) is different from the regular card.

That '68 Seaver proof is epic. Would have been much better than the pic they wound up using, and then using again in 1969.
