Then you should try the buy/sell/trade section instead.

I only have one of them and am rooting for you to make it really valuable but the more you show the more mundane it seems 😊

There have been some crazy sales, when I started buying them 3-4 years ago I figured it would probably take 10 years to make them very valuable on its own without me cornering the market…..the one thing about errors the longer people know about them the more valuable they are and have to hunt for them, everyone I know who’s has paid a giant premium for one are not guys who collect errors regularly but are huge mantle collectors…..and there’s probably 100000x more mantle collectors than error collectors 🤣🤣

LOL, yes and you are the one buying most of them. All it takes is a few posts on the internet saying you hoard a card and prices will rise. I have posted a few times I hoard a certain card. I am the only one who buys them but it doesn't stop everyone from lining up to try and sell me a $.10 card for $100.

Print errors work pretty much like the old pump and dump method. If you pump them up you can get a very very small percentage of player collectors to bite. Most don't care about a beyond silly print error and actually wouldn't even buy at way less than a regular card.

I love print errors but 99.9% don't.

No offense Nick. You're a great collector, creative and always finding interesting angles, but this is such an utterly ridiculous variation IMO. But you know what they say about opinions....if Mantle collectors will pay a premium then more power to you.

There is a market for anything if you pump it enough. Look at the Kaline Band Aid card. Before all the pumping I bought a couple for under $10. Now look at the silly prices they are listed at and sometimes selling for.

Count me as one that spent a somewhat nutty price for Mr. Kaline bandaid head. A beater too, but I now have one.

Butch.

Ben north, I’m someone who’s obsessed with errors and populations of cards, if this mantle wasn’t so rare I’d only own a handful and would called it a day, like when I threw in the towel on the partial diamond there were just too many of them 30 on eBay at a time and new ones popping up everywhere yuck

I also want to thank you, I was about to spend $2000 on a 1958 blue hank Aaron years ago until I read everything you wrote about being faded I even bought a light and did some experimenting to warn other people…. I unfortunately lost 2 good cards friends over it because they had invested heavily in sun faded Aaron’s and didn’t want me warning other people, then it even came down to them saying well yes there are some that are faded but mine arnt faded and were printed like this in 1958 lol!!

I made a video on it https://youtu.be/GvSn3-2dRz0?si=y2-aevkMpcakks4z

I sold both of mine once they hit the $300 range. I thought they were cool but not 30X what I paid cool.

Same thing that is done with the “blue” 58 Aaron can be done with the white letters 1969 Mantle and that’s a known and accepted variation. I wonder how many of those white labels have been doctored and slabbed.

Surely many of them. The white letter Mantle can be a legitimate variation though whereas the blue Aarons are a concocted scam all of the time.

For me personally the most interesting thing about the defect on the back of the 58 Mantle is that it is related to similar back defects on cards 130,135, 142, 150, 183, 189, and 198. Finding them and seeing the relationships is a little tough but interesting. Cliff pulled them all together in one of the earlier threads. He may have others
