Default BABE RUTH with 1922 W.O.W. Baseball Team Photo

W.O.W. 1922 at top of photo and on uniforms...size is 7 1/2" x 9 1/4" - "Billy McKeague" (photographer?) stamped on back.

never heard of the W.O.W. baseball team - appears to be some type of exhibition team or fundraising game or ???

I googled "Orson Stiles". Trail led to radio station WOW in Omaha, Nebraska and something to do with a fraternal organization called "Woodmen of the World". Not sure where to go with this but it's a start. Maybe one of the resident Nebraskans can opine. Cool photo!

I did the same. Here's a website that talks a little bit about the station and Stiles in 1922 (dated on the picture). Possibly some kind of promotional game.

David and Mike:

thank you both for the information you provided.....I have actually heard of the Woodmen of the World but didn't factor that in.....also, upon looking at the photo again, I happened to notice that the Billy McKeague stamp on the back is more than likely the McKeague shown in front row (fourth from left) and that it's not a photographer's stamp.

thanks again.

Just as a follow-up, wasn't 1922 the year Ruth got in trouble for barnstorming...I think he got suspended a couple of times during that year for that and abusing an umpire. Anyway, I'm curious if this was part of his pre-season activities that got him in trouble or if this came about because he had free time on his hands.

Interesting photo...somehow this thread slipped past me. I know that Ruth came to Omaha with Gehrig on one of their tours they did together, but I hadn't realized that he came to Omaha to play with the WOW team. I have a book on baseball in Omaha that I must have looked at 100 times and I don't think this game is even mentioned.
