Based on an old letter I saw here; I myself have a passion for both the 1962 and 67 sets in the 60's. I'll let Teddy talk about his 60's set

Out of curiosity, if you play, collect or deal in any post-war sets; what is your favorite set and why == 62 was because I did that set as a master set collector in the 1970's where information was much scarcer on cards and I love the 67 design.

Love to know what you all think

Rich

My favorite is 1959 Topps. That really is what got me started with collecting. Neighbor kid had some, 3 or 4, and wanted to trade for some shiney stuff my son had. My son showed no interest so I got the cards and started the quest. Took me only about 6 months to complete the set through SCD and local shows (yes, local shows...there were quite a few good ones back then). Set has been broken but I remember selling my Mantle No. 10 PSA 7 to an outfit called WIWAG

I actually like the 1963 Fleer set. As for 1950's sets I am an avid collector of both the 1952 and 1953 Bowman HOF players.

I collect post war as well. In the last couple of years I've completed the 1954, 1961, & 1962 topps set which add to my 1972 to 1990 run. I am currently working on the 1957 set. I have a all the HOFer's and high dollar cards from 1953 on so putting those sets together will just be time consuming.

1. '48 ('49) Leaf, for no aesthetic reason, other than they are so ugly I think they're cool. Half the set is tough, half relatively easy. 3 recognized variations, lots of color variations, and a bit of a mystery about the wrapper
2. '53 Bowman color. Best design and best photography of any post war issue.
3. '67 Topps ditto the above, just not quite as good as '53.

This is just the mainstream list, open it up to smaller regional sets and there is a few more to add to the list.

My favorite postwar set would be the 1963 Topps...just love the borders and the photography. I have been kicking around the idea of putting the Topps sets together from 1960 on up which looks like a pretty easy and relatively inexpensive thing to do as something my son and I can do together. I already have the entire 1972 set and tons of 1960-70s commons so it's just filling in the holes.

1953 Bowman Color - amazing images
1953 Topps - again, images are very interesting
1957 Topps - I'm not sure...there's something about its simplicity
1961 Topps - I have absolutely no idea...I guess the border design is appeaking

Let's see, top 5 mainstream sets:

50 Bowman
53 Bowman Color
52 Topps
67 Topps
71 Topps

Someone mentioned 63 Fleer-I like that one too but it's a little muted.

67 Topps.

I had that set as a kid. It took a while to get it. One reason I kept buying cards was because I was a Cardinal fan. Seems that kids would quit buying cards once their team was eliminated, and that really effects the cards you'd get back when cards came out in series.

I've tried to recreate my childhood, but I don't quite have the set recompleted. Lack about 2 dozen high number cards. Grrrrrrrr... Mom gave them to a neighbor kid when I got older.

My favorite Topps set is 1960 and favorite regional issue is Glendale Meats. I like the different colors on the bottom border on the Topps set.

1956 Topps.

Gorgeous set design, Mantle triple crown year. The final visually stunning Topps set IMO.

There are so many great ones... I think I like the 1975 and 1978 Topps cards best of all. From the 1960's maybe 1967 Topps. From the 1950's, maybe 1958 Topps. Once again, tough choices...

My favorite set from the 50,s 1955 Bowman,60,s 1962 Topps and 70,s 1971 and 1972 Topps. If I had to pick one it would be the Psycheldic 1972 Set. CN

I collect T206 and E98s from the prewar era, but I'm working on a PSA 7 set of the 62 Topps because it is my favorite postwar set. I love the wood background and the vibrant colors in it. But more importantly, it has sentimental feelings to me because when I was a kid in the mid 80's, my grandfather gave me a shoebox full of old cards form the late 50's and early 60's. We lived in Oklahoma at the time, and when my grandparents came to vist us from Indiana, he brought this box of old cards along. Most of the cards in it were just in good to VG condition at best, but I was in heaven. About 3/4 of the cards in the box were from the 1962 set, probably about 60% of the set. I still have those cards gently tucked away in an album, although in their condition they probably aren't worth much, but of course they are priceless to me. A few years back, I lost the greatest man I have ever known and to honor him and help keep my memories of him alive, I set out to someday complete a set. I chose to start from scratch and go with PSA 7s because 7 was both of ours' lucky number, and it is a really nice grade which I can still afford! I have 103 so far, but I will never part with my old, beat up 62s which will someday be my son's.

Just kidding. This thread is as good as a Greg Maddux change up!
My favorites...

1950 Bowman-beautiful little cards and the first set to have the distinctive "painted photos" of early to mid 50's cards
1953 Bowman-stunning photography and clean design
1955 and 1956 Topps-just love the horizontal format and art, they have such a 50's baseball feel
1962 Topps-oh those ugly woodies!! Gotta love 'em
1971 Topps-black beauties
1984 Donruss-Just a great design
1987 Topps-see 1962 Topps

Dislike...
1954 Bowman-just too drab
1968 Topps-potato sack borders. Yuck!
1981-1983 Donruss-just crappy designs
1982 Topps-some kind of disco throwback 10 years too late, nasty!
Anything after 1991-mostly just a muddle of gloss, shine, and inserts that I can't or don't care to keep track of.

Rich, thanks for the great thread!

Damian

I'm building a 1965 Topps Baseball NM set. I'm a little over 30% complete right now and need nearly all of the key cards (Mantle, Rose, etc).

I also collect the 1951 Bowman football set.

If I ever get ANY of the sets I'm working on complete, I may try the 1959 Topps Baseball set in EX.

From the 70s---1972 (love the design) and 1975---colorful
60s---1962 (Design) and 1965 (love the cards......no idea why I've never started the set(???)
50s Topps---1952; never really paid much attention to them until I started cruising eBay looking at lots and thought "Man, these are nice....if I ever get a Mantle I'll start the set." Well, I got the Mantle and off to the races I went. And, 1956 Topps has always been a favorite since I started collecting in '82.
Bowman--1951. No real reason, just like 'em

1954 Topps
1975 Topps

I pick up a few beater 54's every now and then and lots (groups) of 75 - 150 75's now and then. Some day I'll complete 'em. No rush, just good fun.

Nice thread. I like learning what people are into.

Thanks,

Andy
