Default July Pick Up Thread

I have been looking for a game worn 1971 era Pirates hat for a while. I finally found one that was in my price range and in great condition. This one originated from 3rd base coach Frank Oceak's family. I have also been looking for one if these banks for a couple of years. Then of course three showed up on Ebay the same day.

Perhaps this doesn’t count as vintage, but I picked up a game used ball from Game 5 of the 2010 World Series.

It cost a pretty penny, but I’ve sold a bunch of stuff lately, and needed something to do with the cash. As a Giants fan, I figured a ball from their first World Series clinching game in San Francisco was a no brainer, and no guarantee any trustworthy ones come up for sale in the future..

I love that your bank is wearing a 1971 style cap! Great pick ups!

Cool ball, I'd love to find a 1971 World Series ball and the graphics on that game box are awsome. Great pick ups! Rob, I have seen the bank with a 71 world series champs graphic added at the base. I passed on two of them over the years because of condition issues. I wish I had not been so picky.

Outstanding pickups Mike! I love the fact that so many (previously) hard to find items are making their way out to the collectors. I know I've been finding several things lately that I haven't seen in quite awhile. I know you already have one, but I just saw a Rimp Lanier 3x5 on Ebay. Can't remember the last time I saw one. Love that 71 team!

Thanks Mike, I agree that it's cool that so much stuff is hitting the market. Ironically this morning I picked up a Clemente pin that has eluded me for years. I'm sure I over paid but these opportunities have been far and few in between. I was hoping that Rimp Lanier would be on the unlined side of the 3X5. Nonetheless $380 is a crazy price tag for a guy who had 4 plate appearances. I dont know why he is so difficult. I once mailed him a photo and included a return envelope and $30. He never responded and kept the money.

Default Jordan/Ray-O-Vac

Thanks to fellow site member, Fred Y, was able to pick up this interesting P O S Jordan advertising piece. It`s huge, 36 X 34 and almost 3 inches thick and was designed to hang from the ceiling. Looks great in the hobby room. Thanx again Fred very nice meeting you sir !

Nice acquisition, Kenny. Very tough to find an example of that game that isn't crushed and battered to all heck.

Thanks horzverti! Although I primarily limit my Pirate collection additions to items produced between 1970-72, I will occasionally pick up a later item if it fits my focus on the members of 1971 team. This item falls in that category. It is a class of 2001 HOF induction watch that originated from Bill Mazeroski's estate.

I love those expo helmets. It reminds me of the helmets I used to have ice cream served in as a kid! I always went for either the expo or orioles helmet. Sorry, I know this is rambling....

From Dairy Queen?. If so I sure remember sundaes being served in small upside down helmet cups. Probably 30 years ago? I thought each week was a different team but perhaps you could choose what team you wanted.

I got this awesome jacket in the mail today thanks to a fellow member.

It is a Joe Girardi Yankees team issued away batting practice jacket from when he was managing the Yankees.

The best part is it fits me. Way too hot now but I will be sporting this awesome jacket this fall.

Default My newest items

Have not been super active the past couple years with daughter in college and saving some money, but did manage to pick up a few new items.

1935 AS Game photo with Gehriger and Bob Johnson

1938 Studio photo from Christy Walsh estate and Sheet music from the only movie Gehrig was in "Rawhide." The photo was used for the sheet music as well. I have a few others from the same shoot as well

Default A fun and inexpensive collectible

I finally got around to zeroing in on Hostess cards from the 70s.

My idea was to get the panels and reconstruct the boxes as I've done with 60s player wax boxes.

It's been reported that a "warehouse find" of unused flat boxes caused the bottom to fall out on these cards?

That's fine with me since these HOF'ers can be had for less than 10 bucks in some cases - the Yount RC was a whopping 25 bucks.

And what's cool is that the Blyleven wound up being an HOFer along with Seaver.

So, in reconstructing, I fortify the box with foam core and then shrink wrap the box - so here we go:

May I ask, how are you reproducing the box itself. I assume you don't have many boxes sans bottom panel to use. Btw, they look great.

Default Right from eBay

Hi

Thanx!

As I said in the intro - these panels were probably a warehouse find - never used in the production of the product - thus they're not bent.

Here's a Yount on eBay for 24 bucks:

Haven't checked yet but I'm guessing the 75's are more plentiful as a complete panel compared to the later issues.

It would've been super if they had used Brett in 1975 to go along with Yount.

I like your style, stone! That’s something I would do if I could shrink wrap. I’m assuming you need a special “shrink wrap machine”?

Hiya Rob thanx.

You can pick up a kit on eBay - there's a little learning curve to using the heat gun to shrink the wrap - it's easy to burn the wrap - just have to learn to "wave" the gun around while shrinking.

Here's an example on eBay.

I got a 12" sealer and a packet of shrink wrap combined for less than 100 bucks. I didn't see any like that but a search might do the trick.

You can find a "how to" on youtube which will help if needed.
