I was hoping for some help IDing this photo. It looks like opening day for World Series or season. The flag looks like the seal for New York. Yankee Stadium ? 20's, 30's, 40's ? Anyone look familiar ?

Thanks, Rich

I think that seal is for the City of New York. That would put you in Yankee Stadium or the Polo Grounds. I'd think Brooklyn had a separate seal.

The two onlookers look vaguely familiar, you might Google New York Governor photos and Mayor photos and see what you can find... I would now if I had more time, just home for lunch.

Frank.

John Francis Hylan defeated the reformer John Purroy Mitchel in the 1917 mayoral election for New York City, restoring the power of Tammany at City Hall. Hylan won re-election in 1921 by a wide margin. Hylan was defeated for re-nomination in 1925 by State Senator James J. "Jimmy" Walker.

So if that is 1918 to 1924 in baseball seasons, and Yankee Stadium wasn't built until 1923... that narrows it down a bit.

Steve knows his NYC history.

That guy looking out onto the field may well be Jimmy Walker, who followed Hylan. Walker won election twice, but resigned during the second term and left for Europe, possibly to avoid criminal actions.

Interestingly, when he took office, Mayor Hylan was quoted as follows: "[City workers] must not roll in city automobiles with cigars in their mouths...[or] be conspicuous at baseball games when they should be in their offices."

By the way, here's another photo of him at a game:

Thanks guys. The only question now is Yankee Stadium or Polo Grounds. If it is a WS opener then it would have to be 1923 at the stadium or 1922 or 1924 at the Polo Grounds. That was a great ident on the mayor.

The guy looking out at the field looks like the "Governor Edwards" mentioned in the newspaper story. (Edward I Edwards, governor 1920-1923 then Senator 1923-1929)

Bill

I agree, Bill, that is Edwards, not Walker. Those eyes on that other guy, watching the throw, I've seen him in other photos...

We're not done!
