Default Beckett Grading ad in Old Cardboard Magazine

Posted By: dan mckee

Just went through the Old Cardboard magazine. Damn nice publication! Anyway, did anyone else notice this? A grading company advertising in a vintage magazine to grade vintage cards. ok, that makes sense and seems reasonable. But in their full page ad to grade vintage cards, they picture REPRINTS! ok, that is where I want to send my vintage cards, to a company that pictures reprints in their ad. Grading baseball cards is simply amazing!

I was stunned to see that ad in the first place. Somebody didn't do a very good demographic check on the readership.

Ads pay the way for a magazine, so I'm sure the publishers are please to see a big advertiser. I subscribe to a couple of shoestring magazines, and I feel good when I see a plethora of ads in the pages.

Dan- I saw the ad with the reprints too and my first thought was this has to hurt them more than it will help them. Would it have been so difficult to find a few genuine cards either raw or previously graded by them to fill the ad? Simply a baffling case of bad p.r.

This is just a guess because the cards stand out in the ad so much but maybe theyre trying to say that we should trust them so we dont get stuck buying the fake cards? I was looking in the ad for anything pertaining to that and i didnt see it.

Maybe theyre doing the hobby a service by making it seem like theyre not smart enough to differentiate between real and reprints. Then when they get the cards they will destroy them to take them out of the hands of dishonest people! Bravo BVG!

Save those magazines, in about 100 years someone will be buying 'em up and grading cut outs from them.
