I know I read a story once where Ted Williams was shooting ducks from the Fenway outfield...maybe it was a common practice for the players to be armed.

Actually, during WWI, any players not in the Army had to drill with rifles daily. The owners felt this would prevent the Government form shutting down Baseball for the duration.
