Default post-war guys...your oddball items?

kinda taking jason's copernicus card post and starting it's own thread...

do you collect any other oddball stuff, baseball or something else completely off the wall?

i do a search for "white whales" looking for baseball cards every once in a while and have acquired a few items that i thought were cool or artistic:

Default Did someone say postwar oddball?

I love the oddball stuff from this era. There is so much of it to keep player collectors chasing. Here are some of my favorites.

Default Brooks Robinson

I really like this thread, but haven't seen any items displayed lately so I figured I'd add one. I personally enjoy looking at all of the odd-ball stuff!

By the way, if anyone knows what this picture pertains to I'd like to know. Was thinking it may be something used for a shoe ad since the sneakers definitely look out of place on the field It would also be a possibility for First Federal as well?!?

Al,

On the Bobby Grich piece it looks like they're meant to be cut out; is this the case? Those are all cool items by the way.

My guess would be as it contains the palms and looks like a Florida shot, plus is signed after his Hof induction that this is a freebie from the fantasy camps he used to have in ft. Myers in the mid 80s to early 90s.

Thanks for your thoughts on the Brooksie picture. I believe the photo is likely from at least near the time frame of the picture which is around 1964. Notice the facsimile signature, which is Brooks' style from the 1960's and the picture was likely taken during spring training that year (Miami). I purchased this from 16goldgloves, which is Brooks' companies eBay user ID, a few years ago. Most of the items they put up are recently signed even though some of the pieces are older items. Wish they wouldn't do that, but they do. Personally I like the vintage items unsigned and/or signed during the time frame of the piece.

Default Coke caps

How are coke caps judged condition wise ? Are there "unissued" caps out there that were never affixed to a bottle ? "Proofs" that are unbent or crimped ?. If opened, what would be difference from poor to mint or near mint ? Did people collecting them originally have special methods for removing caps with minimal damage ?

I've never really been concerned with condition, since I just collect the ones with Hank Aaron. I have seen a few unused caps. I suppose a bottle cap collector would be more concerned with condition than a player collector. I just think they are a just another fun way to get vintage pieces to go along with my Aaron cards. I am always looking for some I don't have. One comes up every now and then - I picked up a Coke 16 ounce cap this morning.

My understanding is this was a NY Daily News insert in 1955.

Always thought this card was neat, but I guess it's truly "pre-war".

Thanks. I also picked up two others. The Williams is evidently also from 1955, and Brooksie is 1962.

Perhaps a New Yorker on N54 can shed light, but I gather these were inserts to the Sunday edition of the NY Daily News (aka the Sunday News?).

Are you sure 1962 on the Brooksie? I don't "think" they used the block lettering on the jersey until 1963, but I could be incorrect. Either way I think those are some "GREAT" pickups.

Jason,

Good guess, but no. Look at his '78 Topps card and see what it would look like trimmed.

Ha! See how when individuals type something sometimes you can't tell kidding or sarcasm.

Correct; it's the Topps match print photo from the '78 Topps #100 card.
