Default What Does 'First Graded' Mean?

Posted By: DJ

Veteran collector has a newbie question. I just purchased my first 1914 Cracker Jack card and it comes in a GAI holder and says 'First Graded'. What does that mean exactly?

Thanks for your help,

DJ

I'm fairly sure that it means not only the first card, but the first card in that specific grade that GAI has graded (for example, there could be a T206 Fred Clarke in 8.5 and 9.0 and both would say "first graded").

In other words, it means absolutely nothing.

So basiclly what you are telling me is that the first Frank Chance 4 and 4 1/2 and 5 and 5 1/2 and so on are all graded with the 'First Graded' tag and another 5 wouldn't have that tag?

Seriously, whose dumb idea was that?

It was a gimmick that they hoped might ad some cache to their brand. It's basically a joke now. It might have meant something if it was just the first card in any condition graded, but when it turned out to be every grade for each card, everyone pretty much said, big deal. Maybe for shiny junk it means something since it's all 8-10, but for vintage cards, it truly is meaningless.

Maybe I should crease up a chiny card really good so I can have the first graded GAI 1.0 superdelux eye-blinding laser refactor of Clint Barnes.

I like to sit outside drink beer and yell at people. If I did this at home I would be arrested, so I go to baseball games and fit right in.

It mesns the first card of that pose of that guy in that set, and that exact grade they made. At first I thought it was sort of sweet, but what's the point? To show that they were very careful with their first cards, not carfeful, inexperienced, a new company....what?

When I talked to Steve Rochi about it, he said the first time you have any card graded with them it's "First Graded". If you have them open the slab and regrade, it would be "Second Graded" and so on.

I am the proud owner of the first E92 Dockman Honus Wagner ever to be graded a 4.5 by GAI and damn proud of it. Without it... there would be a little more room on the label.
