Orig 1911 VANDERBILT CUP AUTO RACE Souvenir PENNANT 34" Savannah Georgia

https://ebay.us/qOXEAH

It seems way off to me (despite the sellers guaranteed authenticity). It's very white for 110 years old. Also interesting, it looks nothing like 1910 or 1912 Vanderbilt Cup pennants, neither of which has sewn on letters or images. In fact there is another 1911 Cup pennant that does closely resemble the 1910 and 1912 pennants (and it sold for $5700+ on ebay about 10 years ago). No pin holes seems unlikely as well. Lastly, the image of the car in tonights auction shows only a single driver, while all other pennants have two in the car. I don't know enough about the race or these pennants to know for sure but I see enough red flags that I wouldn't have bid on it. Also below are the other 1910 thru 1912 Vanderbilt Cup pennants...
I saw that too, but I didnt see what it ended at. I thought it was legit as that was a common style for that era. I understand what you mean about different styles, but I think its good. Just my opinion.

The Yankees pennant is early 70s utilizing the older styles. That style was used from the 50s all the way to I guess the 70s. The pennant needs to be dated on the material and stitching. Generally these pennants were already using synthetic stitching for the piping, but not all. The earliest of synthetic pennants still used regular fabric string / thread for stitching the piping.

Any ideas about the manufacturer of the Yankees pennant?
The Yankees pennant, I believe, is by ADFLAG. I think it may have been made somewhere in the 1960s.

The "New York" script matches other known ADFLAG pennants from that era for the Yankees and (AFL) Jets.

Thanks. I was thinking it had to be made somewhere before 1969, otherwise it would have the MLB logo.

What pushed me later initially was that it's warped. 1970s material is more prone to warping than 1960s material. At the end of the day, pennant dating is like horseshoes and hand grenades....close counts and is as good as we'll ever get unless it's dated.

This is correct.

I have that same Yankees version on softer felt. They went with that particular design for many years. The really stiff ones are late 1960s - early 1970s. I have seen them so brittle that they actually crack (not something that real felt would ever do, and that's where I draw the line in my personal collection, haha).

Beware of some pennant lots in the Huggins and Scott Auction that just opened. I see at least 3 lots with reproduction pennants that are not disclosed, and are being sold as original...

Hope this is helpful!

Yes but I have seen repros of the molester pennant, too, on cardboard-like felt.

On a related note, I wish Mitchell & Ness stamped their repros. Their existence screws up the market.

Lot 2059 in the current REA is a great photo, as it puts a specific 1916 date on some Brooklyn Pennants we've discussed here. Very rare to be able to put a specific date on pennants this early. There just aren't many "pennant photos" like this to have survived.

My dumb new laptop won't allow me to copy/paste a link, but thought that many here would find the photo interesting.

Wow what a great pic!!! Gotta love those white dated pennants, just like the Red Sox versions that have appeared. Dont think the Dodgers have ever surfaced in auction. But theres the batter pennant kinda hidden, too.

Anyone know of any Superbas/Robins pennants besides the ones from the bakery?

I've never seen this exact photo before; but, beware, there's a better photo taken (I presume) by the same photographer from a different angle that the Library of Congress now owns....

The photo was taken at game #1 of the 1916 World's Series at Braves Field; and, the woman on the far right is Mrs. Ed McKeever, the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers--er, Robins--er, Superbas!

And to Greg's point, this has to be the earliest Brooklyn pennant to feature the nickname, "Dodgers," thereon because most simply read "Brooklyn" from that era.

Apparently, they stocked up on pennants before boarding their train to Boston because there's no less than 5 Brooklyn pennants depicted in the photo if you look carefully enough.

Good stuff, Kyle … on a related note, I wonder if every team is represented in the “B.B.C.” series of 1910s pennants. I haven’t seen Brooklyn in this “series”. Here’s the Washington example for reference … I’ve seen Phillies, Red Sox, Giants, Cubs.

Default Chicago Pennant Co. college wool pillows

I was thrilled to pick this off of a recent eBay run of several different colleges, all in perfect condition. This one has a cool leather insignia. There is a large tag "manufactured by Burton-Dixie, Chicago, Ill." and a smaller tag "manufactured by Chicago Pennant Co., 6542 Cottage Grove Ave., Chicago, Illinois." Anyone have a guess on the vintage of the this beauty?

Domer has dated many of the Chipenco tags in his blog.

Here's something you don't see every day....A Keezer football pennant. I've owned this pennant for years and had no idea it was Keezer.

Default Houston start pennant

So... I think that the pennant on top more or less solves the mystery of whether or not the one below is an Astros pennant.

Default Pennant catalog

It's been a while since my last update but I've been slowly adding to the Pennant catalog. Here's the latest version in pdf form

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sPW...ew?usp=sharing

I have about 12 more pages of this thread to go through and a some tidying up to do. But, as always, your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thanks to everyone who's shared photos and knowledge for this endeavor.
  • The catalog now has 1,273 entries
  • 30% have the rarity defined
  • There are pennants from 25 manufacturers.
  • 43% of the entries have the manufacturer specified

The top 10 teams rankings are as follows:
  1. Giants 225
  2. Dodgers 173
  3. Cubs 84
  4. Yankees 65
  5. Tigers 63
  6. Phillies 52
  7. AS Game 44
  8. Reds 43
  9. White Sox 42
  10. Indians 41

I found a nice copy of the elusive 1969 cloth Giants pennant on ETSY. I think I've bought 3 pennants on ETSY in 10 years of insomnia induced searching.

Beautiful, and I believe one of only two pennants in this series in one-color print (the other being the Twins, which does come in both red and blue cloth.)

It appears so, and they feel like the same material as the pennant

I don't think those are strings. Tassels look like that if they've been tied in a knot for many years.

They definitely are felt and were always that width from what I can see.

Nice.... Are those 3/4 or full size? Definitely rarer than the typical Trench Stadium versions you typically see.

Random, obscure, meaningless observation made to keep this thread from sinking . Heres a 1969 Trench Pilots pennant, weve all seen it before, but this has a MLB trademark like nothing Ive seen on any other pennants

Anyone else have any oddities to share?

Not from the National, but Kyle and I had the opportunity to tour Gary Cypres' Sports Museum here in LA and saw some amazing artifacts. We only had a couple of hours and spent most of out time in the Dodgers sections which included virtually ever vintage early Dodger pennant and banner you could imagine, but then knowing Kyle and I liked pennants, Gary pulled this one out of a stack of frames he had in a storage room.

Been there, and needed a full roll of paper towels to control my drooling. Could you believe the "sea" of Dodgers' game used Uniforms , early equipment, and the gigantic vintage Ad Signs?

That Campanella All Stars Pennant is a Holy Grail. However, I guess it somehow didn't make the cut for being displayed. Pretty amazing.

I pulled up pics from his museum, only saw a few pennants scattered. Anyone with other pennants pics? Id love to know if there was either a 1950 or 1953 Dodgers scroll pennant.

I did see the rectangular pennant two of them so much harder to find than the 54 Indians .

Rob, it is actually much more than a Dodgers museum. Gary's Dodger stuff is incredible (the best Dodger collection in existence without question), but he also has rooms devoted to other teams and sports. We just rushed through the Yankees rooms, passed by a wing devoted to Ruth, and yes, the giants are represented as well.

While the museum used to be open to the public, it is now closed. I met Gary years ago when we both loaned items to the Dodger Stadium pop-up museum (he loaned over 95% of the items shown there and still loans items for exhibit in the stadium), and he graciously allows me to visit the museum from time to time.

BTW, most of the pennants on exhibit are simply nailed to the walls. The Campy pennant pictured above is framed because it will be part of an exhibit Gary is putting together of Negro League players which will be on display at the Stadium.
