Show your Boston Nationals,. Beaneaters, Doves, Braves etc
July 4, 1914 South End Grounds, Boston. The "Miracle Braves" vs Bklyn. They couldn't get any lower at this point!
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot... Blackstone Cigar is NEU alumni bldg today and a gem. These two structures had another floor added; The Huntington Ave AND the South End Grounds are now beneath NEU. Progress ehh? 1914 Miracle Braves leather pillow cover, 23x24". Thanks Rawn and Greg...
I like that knife and pennant too. The knife has Mack and the Athletics on the other side. Ironically, that same Pitcher image was used on a 1915 Red Sox Pennant. I know that one of the Forum members has it beautifully framed... I should know who it is but am having a brain fart... pretty sure it's Greg, but could be Steve. Boston Braves no-hit pitchers
Here are some items related to two pitchers that threw no-hitters for the Boston Braves:
- Jim Tobin ticket and snapshots from his no-hitter on April 27, 1944. I recently posted this, but it fits this thread. I also have added a Burke PC of Tobin while he was a member of the Boston Braves. - Verne Bickford no-hitter tickets (two different variations) from August 11, 1950 and his 1952 Bowman rookie card. I also have a 1949 snapshot of Bickford while he was playing for a northern CA affiliate of the Braves in 1949 prior to his call up to the bigs. There is a terrific signed magazine cut as well as a vintage fountain pen signed GPC of Bickford. BTW, both Jim Tobin and Verne Bickford's signatures are very challenging to find as they had earlier death dates. |

You're welcome, Doug. Glad to see the photo found an appreciative new home! Ditto on the Tobin snapshots, Scott.
I'm coming to this thread way late, but am really liking the old photos. Here's a few others that have passed through my hands: Kaiser Wilhelm ca. 1904 Bill Collins ca. 1910 1944 Braves Field panoramic (34" x 7-1/4") 1947 Vince DiMaggio & Bill McKechnie Tommie Aaron ca. 1962 Last edited by thecatspajamas; 04-30-2012 at 10:34 PM. |

Incredible items! The photos from the grand opening are really cool.
Below is an odd Braves item I acquired at the last Wilmington MA show. It is the letter R from a display that spelled out Boston Braves supposedly. Supposedly, it hung in the stadium at one point. I have no evidence to support either of these, but it is cool nonetheless. It is made of wood and is wrapped in plastic with cardboard backing in the photo below. Does anyone know anything about this? Has anyone seen any other letters? Supposedly, the dealer sold a B and an A 10-20 years ago. Alan Elefson aelefson@hotmail.com |

"Abba Dabba" Jim Tobin
Here is yet another snapshot of Jim Tobin taken while playing for the Boston Braves. Tobin threw one official no-hitter as well as an unofficial no hitter (called after 5 innings) in 1944.
An interesting side note is that in his 9 inning no-hitter on April 27th, 1944 he also hit two HR's. Tobin hit 17 HR's in his short career. The guy could swing it! Just curious if anyone recognizes the ballpark in the background? PLMK-thanks! Last edited by Scott Garner; 11-25-2012 at 05:14 PM. |

Alan, I have seen some pennants similar to the one you posted. They were in an old Slater's Americana catalog. The pennants were described as about 10 inches long, cloth covered with a hard cardboard backing. But the letters above the pennant were for the word CARSTAIRS, I believe a liquor company or distribtor. See scan

I've been trying to ID the players in this photograph for years, Phil. The Boston team is almost set with 1. Leonard, 5. White, 6. Barnes or Addy, 7. G. Wright, 8. Spalding, 10. Schafer, 11. H. Wright, 19. Barnes or McVey, 20. O'Rourke. It astonishes me that I can't ID Barnes, of all players. The Philadelphia IDs are more sketchy. 3 looks like Ned Cuthbert, 16 is definitely Chick Fulmer, and I'm pretty sure 15 is Levi Meyerle. After that I'm unsure. Since the image is not real sharp, some players are difficult to ID.
