Default 1915 Red Sox...or 1916?

In looking at this lot that was just sold at Goodwin, it strikes me that it is very unusual that Tris Speaker is absent from the team photo. That would make sense if the photo was the 1916 Red Sox (Speaker was gone to Cleveland), rather than the 1915 team.

Another note - also missing is Rube Foster, who was a major factor on the 1915 Red Sox, winning 20 regular season games, and pitching great ball in the W.S. Though he was still on the 1916 team , he was not the star in '16 that he had been in '15.

There is probably some giveaway why people have concluded this is a 1915 photo, but I don't know what it is - can somebody fill me in?

Cheers,
Blair

Well, in the original photo (just below) we have Speaker (front row 3rd from left), Foster (front row 2nd from right), Vean Gregg (back row between Shore and Ruth, and Jack Barry also in the back row between Hoblitzel and Dr. Green.

In the auction photo (below the original photo) Mike McNally's head was pasted over that of Speaker, Guy Cooper's head covers the head of Rube Foster,. Jack Barry's head was cut off and pasted over that of Gregg and the rest of Barry's original body was discarded.

Looks like you're right, guys, a 1916 premium "adjusted" to reflect changes from the previous year. I wonder how much of a premium the bidders placed on the 1915 date?
