Default Fewster

Picked up a 1922-25 Chick Fewster game used bat...34 inches....37.9 oz...I think this is when he was with the Red Sox either from 1922-23....He was traded to Cleveland before the 1924 season....Bat came to me from MASS.

Anyone who might have a photo of Opening Day April 18, 1923 of Chick Fewster at bat as the lead off hitter.....PLEASE contact me here...Thank you very much!

I found an autograph I've been looking for for years and have never seen until now! Dale Van Sickel, 1928 All American and the first from the University of Florida. He went on to a 40 year career as an actor and stuntman. So excited about this!

I picked up this 44" X 35" 1971 Pirates welcome banner (pic 1). I have a similiar 40" X40" street banner (pic 2). However, this recent pick up differs in that it is a light weight synthetic fabric and has no means to hang it. The version in pic 2 is a canvas material and is reinforced at the top with grommets for hanging. I have been told that these were hung around the city obviously to celebrate the Pirates victory. The seller of the recent pick up communicated that the banner was discovered in a home that was being cleaned out in Maryland. I have no idea what its purpose was. Has anyone else seen this version before?

Nice pickup, Mike! Are the graphics the exact same size? I’m thinking they are. If so, that and the fact your new one is not centered on the material makes me think it could have been a test run for the grommeted one.

You may be correct Rob. They are the same size and there is a yellow ink transfer on the D and what appears to be a Red bleed area along the top boarder. Your theory is plausible. The fabric is machine stitched around the boarder to prevent fraying? It also seems odd they would do a test run on a fabric they didnt use in the final production. I have a large 1971 NL Championship stadium banner that is made of this same synthetic material. Thanks for your thoughts.

Default Cleveland Baseball Magazines

I was fortunate to add two seldom-seen items to my Cleveland Baseball Magazines Collection this month

-1950 Aug Negro Digest Magazine with Luke Easter on the cover.

-1962 Hit Magazine (Venezuela) with Mgr Mel McGaha on the cover.

The Luke Easter mag (about as big as Baseball Digest) has been on my wantlist for some time. Happy to add this issue, despite the vertical crease mark.

I was unaware of the Mel McGaha magazine cover until it popped up on ebay.

I now have about 105 different Cleveland Baseball cover subjects. Always looking for more!

Got 4 new items.
First one was from several months ago, but I did not post at the time as I had been busy, but two of the new items fit together with the first so i decided to post them all together.

I now have the complete set of Lou Gehrig Columbia yearbooks
I got the 1922 several months ago and the 23 and 24 this month.
Am thrilled to be able to add them and thanks to those who made them available to me.

Lastly was a pair of 1960 NY Mets souvenir mugs.

Picked up another folder of photos and clippings from the family of Tom Seaver’s (and Jim Maloney’s) childhood coach. Great photo of Seaver, bottom row, 2nd from left in the team photo.

Default Jackie Robinson program - last game with Montreal Royals

In 1947, when the Dodgers returned to Brooklyn after spring training in Havana and other non-US sites, they planned on playing 5 exhibition games at Ebbets Field, 2 with the Royals, followed by 3 with the Yankees. Jackie Robinson was still with the Royals when they returned. The first game against the Royals was rained out, the second game was played on Thursday April 10, with Jackie at first base for the Royals. During the game, the Dodgers acquired Jackie's contract, and announced they intended to sign him to a major league contract, which they did the next day. Attached is the Ebbets field program/scorecard from that day, the last game Jackie played with Montreal. More than likely, the same program was intended for both exhibition games, but since the first was rained out, this could only have been for the second game. Apparently, the Dodgers frequently used leftover program covers from the prior year for spring training games, so this one says 1946. Jackie is listed second in the order, uniform #9, playing first base. I have seen where they used 1945 covers for 1946 spring training games as well. Cool seeing Campanella and Newcombe on the Royals roster as well.

Lots of great pickups posted already this month -- really like the boyhood Tom Terrific photo.

Here are some of my May pickups, all smalls:
Chuck Hiller Day poster -- just after '62 World Series
Handmade card welcoming Pete Castiglione to the Cubs
Tom Gorman foldover die cut advertising card
Early Astrodome bank (when it was still known as the Harris County Domed Stadium)
Johnny Pesky Navy business card
Mickey Mantle ball with a few other names of All Star players on it
A couple of spools of baseball thread to add to the baseball thread collection

Default Lon Warneke pickup week- The Arkansas Hummingbird

Ironically, I recently picked up two really cool items related to no-hit pitcher Lon Warneke's career:

From net54's Gary Scamehorn, a neat snapper from Spring Training in 1939 on March 27th.

eBay purchase, a neat 2 3/4" x 2 3/4" 13 page Montgomery Ward Lon Warneke booklet entitled "The Art of Pitching". Montgomery Ward apparently sold Warneke signed facsimile balls as part of this promotion that I was unaware of.
I'm guessing that this was during the 1930's or 1940's because he appears to be wearing a Cubs uniform
.
He pitched for both the Cubs and the Cards in his great career that featured 192 wins and a career 3.18 era.

Anyone have one of these balls that they would be willing to part with?
It would make for a neat pairing for my collection...

Warneke pitched his no-hitter on 8/30/41 @ Crosley Field.

Probably belongs more in the Autographs section, but couldn't find a May Pickups thread, plus I think we could all appreciate the artwork. I love the Living Legends set by Ron Lewis. Making it a goal to collect all 20 of them that are signed by the players. Yogi makes the fourth player for me. Already have Mantle, Mays and Snider, I can get around to posting those too!

This program has been reproduced, and other ones I’ve seen had similar apparent “water damage” which I and others have viewed as an attempt to deceive (artificial aging of sorts). Sorry to have to tell you that, and of course, check with others.

I agree. I believe the program pictured is one of the reproductions. Hopefully you did not pay much for it or you can get a refund.

Picked up a 1965-68 Mateo (Matty) Alou LVS U1 model bat. In great shape!

Can’t keep it, but wanted to include it here, as it is we to the hobby.

Default Mini Bat

Picked up a 1947 team engraved Rockford Peaches mini bat and team signed 47 ball...The bat was a gift to then manager Bill Edwards....the ball was signed by the entire team as well as the manager...ball is in great condition considering it is 70 plus years old.
Since the bat is engraved by each individual player.....would you consider this a signed/autographed bat? Interesting thought????

Default Conlon photo of Bill Killefer

Happy to pick up this Charles Conlon photo of Bill Killefer.

It was used for both Killefer's T330-2 Piedmont Art Stamp and for his 1914/1915 Cracker Jack card (card not mine).

Nice!

My pickup isn't that great, but it's ok. It's my 87th Baseball MONTHLY supplement (different from Baseball Magazine). Thank you to Wheatland for that one. I thought I was also getting a new Gehrig variation for my m114 set, but they had their description of the grouping wrong. No hard feelings, the Colavito has been on my list for many years, so very happy to track one down.

Still looking for Elston Howard and Roger Maris to complete the set...
