Default Top 10 Cards all people want in their collection

Hey guys thought this be a interesting thread. I want to see what the top 10 cards that all collectors want to have in their collection. Its going to be different but hopefully we can come up with a list of 10 cards that are a must have. I am not including the Wagner T206 or Plank etc. I am putting down cards that the avg person could afford over time that is. Don't get me wrong a few can fetch big dollars but hey these are why they are needed in your collection.

My top 10 cards are as followed.

1952 Topps Mickey Mantle
1909 E90-1 Shoeless Joe
1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #53 and #181
1911 T205 Ty Cobb
1934 Goudey Lou Gehrig #37
1938 Goudey Heads Up Joe DiMaggio #274
1955 Topps Roberto Clemente
1954 Bowman Ted Williams
1954 Topps Hank Aaron

Really? "All collectors must have in their collection"? Especially on this board you might want to re-phrase....

All collectors need them? Interesting thought. At any rate if you look at the best looking vintage card thread you will get an idea of what people want in their collections. I like a lot of the most popular cards and there is a reason they are on a lot of our members lists and in their collections. This didn't make your list but was shown in the thread about favorite cards....(and it is one of two cards picked to be on Net54baseball T shirts)

In the name of playing along...I dexinitely 2nd the e90-1 cobb(boston) and would nominate the e95 cobb as well.

Additionally I would add the red background cobb to such a generic list!

If you want to take it to a personal level, as I have no idea what other collector "must" have I am looking at these:

1. 1914 CJ Matty
2. 1869 Peck and Snyder CDV Cinci - any variation/back
3. W600 Wagner
4. n172 Wright
5. e107 HOFer
6. 1910 Sepia 796 PC Cobb/Wagner
7. 1907 FP Burke Tigers PC
8. 1915 CJ Jackson
9. 1915 CJ Cobb
10. e107 Overprint

A couple I have, most I don't. I am trying to get something in the works for another at the moment.

Default Should've Had Them

If everyone should have them we need a stiff penalty for anyone not having them all. But given some of them are pretty tough to come by, maybe a grace period would be good.

I think lists like these are fun, even though they aren't very useful since everyone's opinion is different. My top ten list would include all pre-war, and I would have none of the same cards on my list. I think later I'll come back and edit this to include my list, just for fun.

There is a rule that after posting the same card 100 times you have to sell it.

Always fun to see different lists on threads like this. In keeping with the spirit of the OP I will set 100k+ cards like the Wags, Balt News Ruth, and T210 Joe Jax aside. My list takes more of a "player being represented" type of approach...

1. Ruth RC.
2. 52 Topps Mantle.
3. Matty 1914 CJ.
4. A Shoeless Joe: e90-1 or CJ.
5. A Cobb: CJ, T206, T205, D304, T3, among several others.
6. Mantle rookie.
7. A Gehrig: Exhibit' 25, US Caramel, 33 Goudey, 34 Goudey #37
8. A Wagner portrait: e90-2, Williams, M116, W600, etc.
9. A Ted Williams - one of best hitters the gamer ever saw (54 Franks)
10. T206 Plank.

Runners up in the 11-20 Slots: A Joe D (Zeenut, 41 PB, V355, V300), Aaron RC, a Cy Young, Nolan Ryan RC, Jackie Robinson RC, 33 Nap Goudey, Leaf Satchel Paige, Willie Mays RC, A Musial, A Walter Johnson.

I like Matt's list but I would replace Jackson and Plank with Johnson and Young.

Also I think the CJ Wagner would serve as well as the ones he lists.

I think all collectors must have:
- the card of Billy Ripkin with the message on the bat knob
- one good card of Don Mossi
- any card of Dick Trickle

I like your list. It would be interesting to combine all the 'submitted' lists to see which cards were most popular.

Mine:

1951 Bowman Mantle
T206 Johnson portrait
1933 yellow portrait Ruth
1934 Smiling Lou
Mino Wagner batting
T201 Cobb sliding or T205 Cobb
OJ Delehanty catching
N162 Kelly
E95 Cobb
T206 black cap Matty

Its going to be different but hopefully we can come up with a list of 10 cards that are a must have. I am not including the Wagner T206 or Plank etc. I am putting down cards that the avg person could afford over time that is. Don't get me wrong a few can fetch big dollars but hey these are why they are needed in your collection.

My top 10 cards are as followed.

1952 Topps Mickey Mantle
1909 E90-1 Shoeless Joe
1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #53 and #181
1911 T205 Ty Cobb

1938 Goudey Heads Up Joe DiMaggio #274
1955 Topps Roberto Clemente
1954 Bowman Ted Williams
1954 Topps Hank Aaron

Default All Yankees

I have limited my buying to just Yankees/Highlanders. I am currently madly in love with Lou Gehrig. Yes, I am very comfortable with my manlihood. Here are a few of my Gehrig must haves and beautiful to boot (any other Gehrig favorites??):

1933 Delong Lou Gehrig #7

1934 Goudy Lou Gehrig #37 and #61 (these two go together like bookends)

1928 Yuengling's Ice Cream Lou Gehrig #26 (nice strong and simple pic of Gehrig's stone jaw, wow)

1926-29 Exhibit Postcard, Lou Gehrig, Batting see ebay item http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=141280907908

1936 Wheaties Series 1 Lou Gehrig

1935 Wheaties Series 3 Lou Gehrig

1931 W517 Lou Gehrig (happy times)

1934 - 1935 R310 Butterfinger Lou Gehrig

1925 W590 Lou Gehrig (another happy pose)

(fantasy item) R319-Helmar Big League #333 Lou Gehrig Columbia University (I usually I don't like fantasy items but wow Helmar made a beautiful card that I wish was real. An amazing and ghostly picture of Gehrig in his Columbia jersey. They are selling for good money even though they are modern. See ebay item http://www.ebay.com/itm/R319-Helmar-...item19ed8bf943)

What, no Wally Moon?

It's funny, 'because Wally Moon looks like your average American male circa 1965. He could be your uncle, or your best friend's dad. Pretty unremarkable, really, beyond his ability to hit a baseball into the seats. There was one small thing that just stuck out...something that should make his cards obligatory in our collection of ten. At least one of em...

How is it that some lady back then didn't get a waxing strip, or a razor near that mono brow?

All of your lists are messed up - most of those guys never played for St. Louis at all. Not even the Browns.

The regrettable thing about going on a spending spree like the one I have been on the last six weeks is the thrill of the case is waining...with a few exceptions: Some nerd outbid me at the last second on for a PSA-7 '55 Koufax and I'm currently trying to land a PSA-5 '53 Bowman Mantle.

I still have my eyes on either a 4 or 5 T206 Cy Young pitching...

Thanks to all of you guys for reminding me of more cards that I did not realize I wanted....bunch of enablers.

Desiderata

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Strive to be happy.

i love this card...i've owned versions of it 5 different times. i've traded each time for something better in my opinion but i'm sure i'll get another copy before too long...nice card indeed.
