Add me to the list that has bought a counterfeit/reproduction. Lots of fakes out there. PSA no longer grades them. I don't think SGC does either. GAI does.

SGC still grades them, they think they know how to tell the difference between real and fake ones. I guess PSA doesn't think they know the difference.

REA auctioned off a lot of 4 SGC graded cards in their April 2007 auction. They have an interesting description (disclosure: I won the lot)

I was looking at that REA lot a few days ago, & thinking that was a good buy. Those higher quality Ruth candy cards are very nice. Don't see those very often. Nice pickup.

From what I have seen the set of 6 can come in either a lower grade paper stock or higher grade stock and better pic quality. I have one of each in my collection. The higher grade stock ones are more scarce and look really sharp. I have seen some of the lower grade stock ones come with blank backs but not the better ones....These are the 2nd most counterfeited cards behind Fro-Joys imo....Grading companies should be able to grade these...though I am not so sure about Fro-Joys. I heard a rumor that an old Fro-Joy die had been found and some more cards were made..and that is the reason most grading companies won't grade them. I don't know if that is true though....Some fake Fro-Joys look real good....Hope this helps a little bit..These 1928 Babe Ruth Candy cards are some of the best Ruth cards for the money, again ..imho..regards

Leon, do you have the higher grade stock #6 card? It looks to me that SGC only grades the higher grade stock cards...but they haven't graded a #6 in the set.

edited to add: I'm wondering if the #6 cards were shortprinted, as the back of the higher grade stock cards state "when you have the complete set of 6 Pictures, send them to the Geo. H. Ruth Candy Co., Cleveland, Ohio, and you will receive a Baseball with Babe Ruth's genuine signature on it. FREE OF CHARGE.".

So it makes sense the #6 card would be very difficult to find since:
1. one of the cards were short-printed to make it difficult to complete the set.
2. when someone did get a #6 card, it meant a complete set (as the other 5 were probably much easier to get), and thus there's no reason not to send the set in for a signed auto'd Ruth ball.

I had about 5 of the 6 in the set that I won on ebay for a song....I think you bought one or two and I eventually sold most of the rest. The only ones I have are on my site. Your hypothesis sounds feasible....
