Default 1914/1915 Boston Baseball Time Capsule

Posted By: Pat

Knowing that several board members are Red Sox fans, I thought I would share my most recent acquisition a collection of about 20 1914 and 1915 Boston baseball tickets. I purchased these in a private transaction from an estate here in Chicago where evidently a family member had spent a few years in Boston during this timeframe. They were all on a few scrapbook pages but I was able to remove them with little or no damage to the back. Many of the tickets have the date and or teams/score written on the front or back of the ticket. At first glance it might just look like a great selection of early tickets but after investigating what dates and games these tickets are from, they really provide an insight into the great baseball history going on in Boston during this time frame. Below are the some pictures along with some game descriptions for a few of the tickets:

7/4/14 Only regular season ticket in the group from 1914. Original owner noted the results of a second game of a double header played on July 4, 1914 between the Braves and the Dodgers. Braves dropped both games and would end the day in last place 15 games out of first place. Original owner probably wrote off the season after attending the game and writing the information on the ticket but little did he know that he had just witnessed the low water mark of the 1914 Braves season. Braves would next play on July 6th this time beating the Dodgers and signaling the start of their miracle season eventually winning the pennant and World Series with a four game sweep of the As.

10/10/14 With the Braves out of town in Philadelphia for game 2 of the World Series, our Boston resident decided to keep up with the play by play action at the Tremont Temple which evidently featured an electronic scoreboard. He recorded the event on the back of a Tremont Temple ticket stub noting the electric scoreboard.

6/17/15 On Bunker Hill Day at Fenway Park, a young Babe Ruth took the mound against the St. Louis Browns. Boston won 11 to 10 as noted on the front of the ticket with the date noted on the back.

7/5/15 Included with the tickets is a hand out for Newsboys Day at Fenway Park on 7/5/15 which featured a doubleheader against the Senators. The hand out features 3 Red Sox cheer songs which includes the famous Tessie On the back of the hand out the attendee recorded the event, date and score of the first game in which the Red Sox won 4 to 0 and was called due to rain after 6 innings. The second game of the day was eventually played later in the afternoon which featured Babe Ruth pitching a shutout as the Red Sox won 6 to 0.

8/14/15 - My favorite ticket in the group. Babe Ruth starts against the visiting Washington Senators. Opposing starter was the legendary Walter Johnson in what would be their first matchup against each other as opposing starters. It was significant enough event for our fan to note Ruth and Johnsons name on the front of the ticket along with the score. Ruth and the Red sox would triumph 4 to 3 with Ruth going 2 for 3 and scoring a run. Throughout the years Ruth would indicate this game was one of his fondest memories in baseball.

8/28/15 Our ticket owner visited the brand new Braves Field which had opened 10 days earlier on August 18th. Boston beat the Reds 2 to 0.

10/12/15 With 41,000 other fans, the ticket holder witnessed the Red Sox beat the Phillies 2 to 1 and noted the game details on the back of the ticket. This was the second of two games played at Braves Field which resulted in Boston going up 3 games to 1 in the series. At the next game in Philadelphia, Boston would win 5 to 4 becoming world champions.
