Default Looks Like The Old Judge Book Is Available For Order

Posted By: Dan Bretta

Just got an email from Old Cardboard that the book will be shipped in December and can now be ordered. A little steeper in price than I imagined, but I didn't realize the book was going to be coffee table style. Still works for me...looks like my wife just found out what she's getting me for Christmas. happy.gif

I put it on the Christmas list - and I don't even collect Old Judges. I think this could be one of the premier hobby reference books.

I only collect the Omahas, but this is going to be like buying a master set of Old Judge cards for the price of one common.

Quan, you could probably get close to $125 on ebay for that Ben McDonald rookie card in your avatar.

Just a suggestion. wink.gif

The price is a little high for a book but this is no ordinary book. I can vouch for the massive amount of research and time that went into it incorporating previously known facts you either had to learn on your own from years of collecting,or were lucky to find out from an expert. Plus new stuff that was learned along the way from unknown players names,to brand new teams. Throw in the fact that there are approx. 2500 pictures including every player pose that was available thru various personal collections and many team and product pictures. All the old judge info that you could ever need is jammed into the book from the start of the company thru the whole run of the set. Just the amount of writing and time that went into the bios alone is amazing, each individual player was researched so you have a story to go along with cards that represent the players.

The authors wanted to make sure every detail got covered and I believe they did a fantastic job of it.

Is there anyway that we can get a few pictures of the book (cover shot, page shot), number of pages and dimensions? I would love to see what it looks like. Thanks.

3. 1886 Old Judge Issue
4. 1886/1887 Old Judge Cards
5. Gypsy Queens
6. 1888 Old Judge Cards
7. 1889 Old Judge Cards
8. Old Judge Cabinets
9. 1890 Old Judge Cards
10. Old Judge Production
11. Old Judge Rarities
12. Old Judge Reprints/Reissues
13. Other Goodwin & Co. Baseball Issues
14. Goodwin & Co. Advertising
15. Overview-Old Judge At A Glance
16. Player Biographies (All but about 65 of the 2491 know poses pictured and biographies provided for all 521 subjects in the set)
17. Appendicies

Jay,

Sounds good. I'm buying either way. Paypal is just easier. It's funny, I don't collect Old Judges at all, but I'm really excited about this book! The fact that I'm a huge geek about the minutia of card collecting probably helps. Thanks for all the work you guys put into this.

Even though I only have a few Old Judges the check is in the mail. Hopefully in time for xmas. This is my xmas gift from my wife.

I have a couple of questions for Jay and Joe. In 1983 Lew Lipset listed 520 players and now you state 521 players. Who has been discovered since 1983 ?

You stated 2491 known poses. Are all these except 65 going to be pictured in the book according to your previous post ? If so, why not the other 65 , if you know they exist why not a picture ?

The Standard Catalog states at least 3500 known variations. They need to revise for the next edition if this is not true.

Thanks Mike

Mike---Several new cards have been discovered (Gibson, O'Day-Sacramento, etc) while a few have been eliminated as two listings were discovered to be the same player (Burns-Omaha/KC, Kelly-Manager/Umpire, etc.). There are 2491 known poses. I am not familiar with the SCD catalog but they may be considering team variations and we (and the British Cartophilic Society) are only considering different poses. We are not picturing the other roughly 65 poses because we could not find the cards. They are included in the British Cartophilic Society listing but we could not access the actual cards to make a scan of the pose. Unless you collect Old Judge cards you cannot appreciate the rarity of some of these images. There may only be one or two copies of some poses in existence in the world. Since one major collection is housed at the British Museum (a collection we did not get images from) perhaps some of these cards reside there. I consider it more amazing that we found as many pose images as we did. Lew Lipset has been collecting Old Judge images for over twenty years. He had between 75% and 80% of these images in his reference file, no small accomplishment. We, in one year, got scans of over 97% of the poses. I would hope that some collectors reading the book may uncover poses we still don't have images of or maybe even find some new poses.

I hope you enjoy the book!

Sounds like a great book, but before sending a $125 check, I would at least ask for some pictures of it. Maybe the cover art, some inner pages, etc.

I talked to Richard this afternoon and we are on schedule. If your order has already been received you should have your book by late next week(assuming you did not request an autographed copy which will delay the process since the authors are in three different states).

Hi, is there good coverage of other issues like N162 & N167? From your note it sounds like N172 predominates (and understandably so) but hoping to see good coverage of the other issues.

Sandy--There is coverage of all Goodwin baseball issues, but the verbage relating to N162s and N167s is pretty minimal. However, there are photos of all the baseball N162s and all but two of the N167s.
