Default Why is 59 Mantle more than a 58 ?

I was surpised to see that the 1959 Mantle goes for quite a bit more than the 1958. I thought the 58 was more popular and definately condition sensitive, whats the deal ?

Default Johnny----

I think they normally go for pretty much the same price over time---Maybe you just saw some abnormal sales, or have you studied them for a while?

Default 58 versus 59 Mantle

There are some small minded folks ( Bob and Anthony come to mind ) who do not like those little circles on the 59s. More broad mind people( like Don and I ) prefer those circles to those horrible colored backgrounds on the 58s

In general the whole 59 set normally sells for more than the 58 in similar condition

I think the reason is because the 59 Mantle is in the 1st series (Card #10) and the first series of 59's do sell for a slight premium or at least they did when I collected the set. It is rare that the first Topps series sells for a premium but 59 is/was an exception.

My theory is that sales of 58 Topps were in the tank because the quality of the paper was slightly better then toilet paper and Topps cut back at the start of the 59 season. But that is just a theory

Thanks for the info, I haven't studied extensively but from trying to pick up a nice 59 realized real quick it is more popular than the 58 as far as price goes. It's more on par with the 57 which I find insane. There has to be many more nice 59 Mantles out there than 58's but it is easier to pick up a 58 and I was just kind of surprised. The series 1 aspect does make sense and maybe that has something to do with it.

These two just jump up and down day to day, here is a recent sale of PSA7 and the 58 went for almost twice as much, but in the 5 and 6 range they are pretty similar with the 59 edging out the 58 on many, so much for my theory.

1958 PSA7 for $1052.00

1959 PSA7 for $600.00

Default 59's

There is an article about the 59's in an SMR magazine...I'll have to look over it again. But the year 1959 was the first year Topps used certain colors or something like that..can't remember. I will look when I get off from work, but there were a few things that singles out the 59's from the rest.
