Question regarding cards from the Lionel Carter collection
Posted By: Brandon Brown
Just wondering what everyones' thoughts were regarding the "typical" amount of premium that most of you find acceptable to pay on a nice example, be it T206 or other similar cards that have come up for sale? Is it really worth the extra expense to you guys to add a piece of his collection to yours, or is it just "sentimental" value? Thanks as always! |

For me the most important thing would be that for the cards he personally pulled from packs, I can be confident nothing was done to them. And for that piece of mind, I would be willing to pay a premium. |

To me a card is a card and it doesn't add any value that Mr. Carter or anyone else may have owned it. |

I know there has been threads about collector pedigree's before and there are always going to be differences in opinion. To some, a card is just a card and that is fine. |

I would pay a small premium for Lionel Carter cards. I think it's nice to have a few in my collection. I have a 33 Goudey and am looking to get a T206 Jacklitsch some day. |

To each their own, no added value for me. Hence, I would not pay extra for the pedigree but can certainly understand the other viewpoint. |

I wouldn't pay a premium for Carter or Nagy or Harris, etc.. Similarly, I wouldn't pay a premium for the collector-name stamped T206s that some pursue. But I can understand the appeal. |

...for a T206 card previously owned by Bowie Kuhn. I agree, it is an interesting way to collect cards. |

I might pay a slight premium for a Carter card...but I'd definitely pay a premium for a card collected by a player. Paul's Kuhn card -- definitely as well. So bizarre to think of Kuhn as a card collector, I'm not sure why. |

Question regarding cards from the Lionel Carter collection

I have seen T206 Commons graded SGC 20 go for close to twice as much as I would typically see. I know I have not been successful trying to win one because I have been bidding what I normally would bid for a common SGC 20 and have come up way short every time. |

To answer your question, no. But that's just me. It doesn't make it any different to me than the same card in the same grade collected by anybody else. It makes for neat conversation but I do not see enhanced value. Toe-may-toe, toe-mah-toe! |

Question regarding cards from the Lionel Carter collection
Posted By: Brandon Brown
I havent decided which group I belong to yet: The one that is Pro-collector-collected cards, or the opposition. I suppose its nice to have that added bit of history as part of a collection, but at the same time, with the prices that some equally graded examples are reaching (of the standard graded variety, it may not be of too much concern for a collector of my stature, that being a relitively "recreational" collector. Thanks for all the input and opinions! |

Question regarding cards from the Lionel Carter collection
Posted By: Bob
I have purchased "Frank Nagy" cards but it was because I liked the card not because of the pedigree. On the other hand, I have become such a Lionel Carter fan after seeing he and his wife on Doug Allen's Mastro DVD that I have paid a premium for his ex-cards. I was able to snag some very tough Tattoo Orbits (Alexander etc.) from his collection and although they aren't mint like some of his later cards, they are beautiful. |

That pedigreed cards will be at a premium because of the history of the hobby. We're still maturing as a hobby/business and as such, the notation of pedigree is not quite the same as it is in the coin buisness. |
