Default 1952 Topps Discussion?

I just started collecting a 1952 Topps baseball set and am trying to find those with similar interests to converse with.

I've looked, but didn't find anything...is there a dedicated thread to 1952 topps on Net54 or another site that you might be aware of?

Thanks for having me and looking forward to being part of the community!

Default 1952

There are several 1952 collectors here and there have been several recent threads here about that set. One more never hurts. I have a set. I will try to post some links to earlier threads later today . Where are you on the set ?

By the way, welcome aboard

Welcome! There have been a few interesting discussions on the set over the last few months--there is a search function on the thread you can use if you get bored and want to read through prior threads or want to revive any of the discussions.

I love the 1952 Topps set but only have three cards--Pafko and both Mantle variations. At some point, I'd love to put the whole thing together but just cannot justify the cost of the high numbers or the space that it would take up in my tiny apartment at this point.

Default Graded or NG?

Thanks for the welcome.

I'm also interested in finding out where other 52 topps collectors get their cards. Online, local shops, events, etc.?

Default Gray back?

My understanding is the gray backs are found in cards 130-190.

I recently got this Monte Kennedy (124) and the back especially seemed to match the look of some of the gray back pictures I've seen. Is it possible it's a gray back, or just darker?

Default Welcome

Welcome aboard. I am currently working on a mid-grade, raw 1952 set. At this point, my goal is to collect the low series (1-310). This is a very cool and iconic set and I am enjoying the journey. If you are patient and persistent, you can find some good deals. I have picked up several 52's from the B/S/T section. Lots of great folks on here to deal with.

I look forward to watching your progress. Good luck and keep us posted.

Default Topps 1952 Gray Back/Canadians

The scarce "Canadian" gray backs occur only in cards 131 to 190. Your card 124 back is normal

Yes, Kennedy is a gray - but all Kennedys are gray backs. The gray back refers to the color of the card stock that was used for the cards. Cards numbered from 1-130 are all gray back. Cards above number 190 are all gray backs. Cards in the range of 131 to 190 were primarily printed on cream colored card stock. There were a very limited number of the 131-190 that escaped on gray card stock and are significantly more valuable than their cream colored twins.

Default Journey

The Monte Kennedy card is a gray back ... but every card #1-130 and #191-407 is a gray back.

Cards #131-190 were primarily printed with a white/cream back (no one know why), but a small handful of sheets (probably under 25, definitely under 50) were also printed with gray backs (again no one knows why).

So you have a gray back ... but there is no rare variation for that card.

Cheers,
Patrick

Wow - those stacks are absolutely beautiful!

And holy goodness I had no idea there was that big of a show so close to me. Sincerely, thank you for sharing. And if my wife lets me loose I might even see you there!!!!

I have never been to a big card show before, any pointers? If I come, it will probably be on Friday the 11th. I'm not interested in autographs, just cards. Is an event like this just for autograph collectors, or will there be lots of dealers there to with cards?

Welcome to Net54 Journey. I would suggest you check Joes Vintage Cards on ebay. You can also google his online store and buy directly without going thru ebay if you wish. I have purchased from him many times and he is A+.

Great set........always liked it and started a PSA5 set 7-8 years ago to get to about 100 and then sell them all. Started a raw VGEX-EX set last year a little earlier than this and finished the 1-310 complete and need 19 more to have 1-80 in both red AND black backs. Have 12 high numbers and that'll be the next quest while I'm also working on a bunch of other Topps 1950's-1970's sets.

As for where did you get your cards......I won 3-4 different lots from larger auction houses and got some really good deals that way. 125 or so from Clean Sweep in VGEX to EX really clean for $600+ and some from Huggins and Scott and some from Legendary. Each time I won a lot, I'd run them through my set and upgrade to get rid of creases and poor centering issues and then sell the rest. Some I sold in lots of up to 100, some I sold as singles. I think I sold all my dupes on the BST and people were great to work with.

As for singles, I have bought from battersbox and joesvintagesportscardsii on ebay as well as sirius and mantlerulz I think is the other ID. Also Mike Wheat from ebay. All had decent, albeit not cheap pricing. And I bought some here and there from card shows but we don't have many of those in Louisville, KY either. When it came to the Mays, I won a lot with a SGC60 Mays and Rizzuto in it from Huggins and Scott and was very pleased with them. Tony (CAMMB) on these boards was great to sell me some really nice, clean SGC60 cards for very reasonable prices and sold me the last card (#15 Pesky) that I needed to finish out the 1-310 set. I can imagine what card I'll need to finish out the high numbers if I ever do that......

Still have some to upgrade and add those 19 low numbered cards with different backs and then it's off to pick off the high numbers one or two at a time. Hope you enjoy your run on completing the set. I really have. I have them in normal Ultrapro 8-card pages in an album and they look beautiful. I have the graded ones separately of course.

Good luck!

This is the one full set from the post war era I may still put together especially since I have all of the Dodgers high numbers, which are a large fraction of the last series. To me it has the best overall look of any of the 50's Topps sets, I especially like the backgrounds on so many of the cards. It has the three v's: very popular, very liquid, very iconic.

Welcome to Net 54. To answer your questions re the Chantilly Show:
- Yes, there are quite a few dealers with vintage cards, including some with pre-WWII cards.
- I always go on Friday (Show hours 2 - 8 p.m.) because (1) the admission is FREE, and (2) there is no autograph activity on Friday to distract the dealers, etc.
- It is by far the biggest/best show anywhere near to where you are located.

I like your 3 v's!!! I also like the backgrounds. It was the Johnny Klipstien that sold me, especially the crowd in the background.

AWESOME! I already got it on the calendar and am 95% sure I will be able to make it. And if I came, I could only come Friday night, which sounds like it works out the best anyway.

Journey

Very cool undertaking. Even more so having your kids involved. Bravo, indeed.
I started a low number run of them earlier this year and am up to about 100/310 without too much difficulty.

I, basically, broke the set up into three tiers: (a) most expensive HOFers and other expensive tough cards (Pafko, Loes, etc); (b) mid-range stars and others in that $50-$125 range; and (c) the true commons.

I am attempting to focus on (a) and (b) to only later close out with the 'easier' ones. The Mays is, naturally, proving the most daunting so far. That will probably be one of the last cards I add (unless I stumble across a steal).

I also think your historical curiosity about the players depicted will help you contextualize the set and provide even additional motivation to get it completed.

Best of luck and please keep up apprised of your progress.

Chris,

I agree with Val !!! Definately go to the Chantilly show on Fri, July 11. I always go on the Friday too for the reasons he stated. There are plenty of dealers that sell 1952's there !!!

See you at the Chantilly show !!!

Best,
Alan

Default Changed from graded to raw...

More detail can be found at my blog, but I wanted to write for 2 reasons:

1) This forum truly is awesome! Since I hopped on a couple of weeks ago I have met a bunch of great guys and really had a lot of my questions answered. I don't feel like I've given much back, but will do so as time goes on.

2) I have had a reality check in regards to my desire to get a 52 Topps PSA 5 graded set. I think I jumped the gun a little bit, but I realized some things over the weekend that made me conclude a) a graded set was out of my price range and b) it would be much more fun for me and my kids to collect raw, in binders, so that we can feel the cards, touch the cards, and have a more exciting journey together.

So onward and upward to a raw set. My goal at the Chantilly show is to pick up 10-20 to add to the collection. Pics will be up hopefully this weekend.

Thanks again for letting me be a part of the community!

I applaud you for making this decision. It sounds like this journey is for a collection and not an investment and I can assure you that you and your kids will enjoy the cards even more as you hold them. This may sound crazy, but I swear that I can still smell bubblegum on some of my 52's! I would encourage you to get to know sellers/dealers that you can trust so you can avoid alterations and/or fakes, especially on the higher value cards. A nice alternative to the grading slab is to keep the cards in penny sleeves and top loaders. Ultra Pro makes these for the larger 52-56 Topps and they provide excellent protection at a low cost.

Continued luck on your journey.

Thanks so much Vintage. It just makes more sense for a number of reasons...and thanks for the heads up for getting to know the vendos. It's a shame that that's the case, but such is life.

Question, so with 52 Topps raw, will they fit in the Ultra Pro Platinum 9-slot pages?

If you choose to use sheets, you will need to buy the ones with 8-pockets. They fit 52-56 Topps.

Default Cards in their natural state

All of my sets are ungraded and in binders for easy access. if you are a purely a collector and not looking for a long term investment, I think that is the way to go. But to each his..or her...own

8 pockets are easy to get/ find, and they display well

Vintage...so do they make pages where I can put the card in a penny sleeve, then a top loader, and then in an ultra pro page? (better protection than just putting them in the page by itself)

I am not aware of any sheets like that. You can put the vintage sleeves/top-loaders in the 4-card Ultra Pro sheets if you want to use a binder. I believe I saw that you were using them for your graded cards. These will work the same, but actually stay in the pockets better. Best of both worlds.

Default top loaded in 4 sheets

I have my 54T set in top loaders and in the 4 card sheets. I tried this as a whim and it turned out pretty nice for display purposes. The 54 set is only 250 cards though and it fills up a 3 inch binder pretty tight...

Just thought I would chime in...

Thanks,
Nate Mack
