Default Matty hand fan?

Posted By: George L

Can anyone tell me a little bit more about this Matty hand fan. Are they hard to find. Can't find anything about it. Anyone know the time frame or history of them? Any help would be appreciated.

George,

I'm not an expert on these, but those staples look awful new and shiny to me.

I am with Jim....These, when real, are very valuable and rare. This one looks suspect but I will leave it to someone else to determine authenticity....

George,

I believe this old thread talks about the same thing. Unfortunately, the pics and the links are probably no longer good.

I have owned one of these before. Sorry to say but that fan is not legit.

Yes, these are recent repros
the vintage ones do not have a cut out portion where the stick gets inserted.

Scott knows more than I do about these but originals almost always have staples that have corroded to a dark gray or rust color. No cut slit in the bottom. Rounded stick. And a baseball graphic on the back. The Matty is seen most often as reprinted.

I thought the staples looked too new myself. And interesting to note the paper underneath the top staple looks rather "un aged" if you know what I mean.

Thanks guys... I wouldn't call myself an expert but I am certainly an interested student on this particular issue.

The fresh looking staples, washed out image and stick going through the picture itself are all dead giveaways that the one originally posted is a fake.

Here is a link to an earlier thread where I posted some information on the fans as well as a couple of links to newspaper advertisements from when they were available.

Also, notice the crudeness of the circle cut compared to the Chase fan.

I figured so, but you never know. Thought it was worth a shot. Guess it will look cool on the wall in my basement. Thanks, George

It might be cool to put together a gallery of fakes. I know some major museums have collections of same, I took a class once at the Yale University Art Gallery on fakes. Would be good to have a bunch of comparisons here, pointing out differences like these to help folks determine good versus not so good, eh?

Also, the real fan has baseball stitching on the back and the fake doesn't.
