Default E77 Bat Nelson and Ad Wolgast - scarcity

Can we talk about this card? I can only find the one at the MET from Burdick's collection and a second auctioned by Heritage in a set(2010). I was fortunate to win this and may have well overpaid, but took the risk. What is your take on the scarcity or rarity of this card?

any from that series are fairly tough so if you overpaid a bit, it may be worth the money to not have to search endlessly for it. It took me a while to secure the wrestlers from the set and i am always looking to upgrade but they do not come up too often. I think you did okay.

Default Abe and Monte Attell

I was surprised at how much this Attell went for a couple days ago on Ebay. It’s really not that rare compared to other cards in the set. Prices are still pretty strong.

I figured that if I could only find two images and no other sales made $260 a pretty safe bet. Maybe even lucky.

E80 also tough. Cool card.

$362.89 on the E80 is a strong price but I think it reflects a lack of inventory on the tougher prewar and 19th century issues. it almost feels to me like everyone is holding their breath to see if boxing experiences a gold rush like some of the other sports, so no one is selling the good stuff. Run searches on the tougher N, E and T sets on eBay; virtually nothing there. On the rare issues, some haven't been offered in more than a year.

I don't think it's any scarcer than the other E77's; the whole issue is fairly tough. I only have 11 of them after quite some years keeping an eye on the low grade end. I dipped out on this card well below your winning bid.

Last couple years have been very, very light on the tougher boxing sets appearing for sale.

I had this SGC 10 E80 Monte and Abe Attell that I had on eBay back in November for $199 or Best Offer, got no real eBay offers and sold offline for $140. Probably not too far off from the one which sold for $362, based on the condition.

I see some boxing stuff doing really well, and others not so much. Jack Johnson will continue to be the gold standard for vintage, but others seem to be performing well recently as well.

These came in a deal I did several years ago and have sat in a box on the shelf until I saw this post.

Regarding the e77 nelson/wolgast - because I now own and want it to be scarcer, wondering if that is actually the case. Or, is it just as scarce as the others in the set. My limited research suggests it may be tougher. I don't have good access to pops or historical sales beyond web searching.

Any sales of the Wolgast / Nelson card on VCP are all from ~10 years ago. There were a few SGC 10's and 20's that sold in the $20 - $30 range at that time, but apples to oranges to extrapolate today's prices from those sales.

Looks like a PSA pop of 5 and SGC of 11, which seemed like it was in the same range as most other E77s. So based on that, I wouldn't necessarily think it was any more/less scarce than others from the set.

I haven't found any e77 to be scarcier than another but my sample size is relatively small also. Now if you're talking about name placement variations, some of those seem to be rare...

Thank you for the input. I didn't really have high hopes that it was uber rare and $260 is not much of a risk. Do the tpg's identify names to left or right? I believe I read name to right are the more scarce. Still cutting my teeth.

The name on the left is much more common. The name on the right are pretty scarce. That’s my opinion at least. I know SGC specifies name on left to name on right. I’m not sure about PSA.

Sorry for the poor quality photos, but at least you can see the difference between the two. Exact same card just has the writing reversed.

I have also found the name on the left cards to be more common than the name on right. Generally don't see the name on right command much of a premium though, doesn't seem many of the few E77 collectors do the master set.

I wasn't posting to sell these but a couple members really wanted/needed the Gotch and the Johnson/Kaufan and scooped them up right after I posted. I apologize to the others that contacted me later.

My eternal gratitude

I won the boxing lot in the last lotg auction and have sent out a bunch of e77s for grading. I may have some dupes available, but likely will not get them back from psa until 2022
