I would like to get an email of Carters collection if it is possible. I used to trade with him back in the day. If it is possible my e mail is larryandrosi@comcast .net. Thank you, Larry Moe

Nice! Thanks, Erik! If this doesn't work, and you have gmail, you could always upload it to your Google drive and share it from there.

Could you upload it on Youtube now that it's MP4 formatted? The google doc scenario could work too.

Thanks for doing all this leg work.

Finally got around to watching it, thank you very much Erik for posting the vid.

One of the best parts of the video for me was seeing my lone Lionel Carter example right there in all it's glory at 17:19 when they showed a nice up close shot of his beautiful T206 album with the Hal Chase cards along the bottom row

Very good article as well, I remember reading that one a few years ago. Sad how he was basically forced to sell his amazing collection in order to keep he and his wife safe.

I was hoping to see my lone LC card, but he never flipped to the SL pages. I now know this one won't be for sale soon:

That was a great video. It broke my heart a little to hear Mr. Carter talk about how he couldn't share his set with others. It is such a shame (and legitimate concern) that people would target a collection like that. Part of what makes collecting so much fun is sharing the hobby with others and the camaraderie with fellow collectors.

On further reflection there was one thing from the video that rubbed me the wrong way. The SGC rep said that he owned a mantle that had been the highest graded copy before Carter's. I don't know how I feel about TPG employees having their own cards graded by the TPG. Seems like a conflict of interest.

Does this bother anyone else?

It would be bothersome if we knew for sure he had it graded while he was working at SGC, but it's possible he bought his Mantle already graded, or he sent it to PSA, etc. Tough to know for sure.

The one thing that struck me in the video was how Doug Allen flew out to just look at the cards, but when he arrived Mr. Carter was getting them ready so Doug could take them to be auctioned. Just a little bit saddening to see a lifelong, passionate collector letting go, realizing most likely he didn't have much time left.

These things we collect are all just pieces of cardboard with men on them, and we will all come to the point where we will have to sell our collections. Still, I'm not looking forward to it.

Doesn't have to end that way, pass them down to your son. If you don't have a son, wait till you have grand kids and pass it down to a grandson. Or nephews....

What about my daughter? Can I pass them down to her? She knows base ball history/prewar cards from listening to me for the last 20 years plus she owns a few herself.

I truly treasure the DVD that Mastro Auctions sent with their catalog to introduce the auction of his massive high quality collection. Listening to The Jack Benny Show on the radio while mounting his card collection in those albums--what a beautiful word picture. Painstaking work, but filled with contentment when done.

Doug Allen did not fly over to see Mr. and Mrs. Carter. Lionel lived in close by Evanston, Illinois. They had resided in that home for many, many years. I got to visit him a couple of times in the early 70s. What a delight and privilege!

As I recall, the Mastro Auction people helped the police recover Mr. Carter's collection, though the exact details escape me. It was soon after that that Lionel phoned Doug Allen to begin proceedings about auctioning his collection.

What I will always remember is that afterwards National Public Radio interviewed Mr. Carter about the auction of his collection, and the huge windfall of money it generated. Lionel replied simply, "I'd really rather have the cards."

I miss Lionel. I miss his forceful hobby articles.

First off, I'm glad I was able to convert the DVD and upload it for all to view.
Hopefully the video will remain in our hobby for years to come and serve as a
reminder of the spirit that Lionel Carter left us with. Say what you will about
Mastro Auctions, but I believe the video was truly a marvelous piece of history
about one of the true giants of our hobby.

As I recall, Mastro made one other video about their company. I think I still
have that DVD as well.

I want to say that during Mastro's heyday, as part of their auctions they
produced videos of some of their finer lots. Does anyone have any of these
videos, or have access to them? I once wrote to Legendary Auctions inquiring
about the videos, but as I recall they didn't keep them in their archives.

Any help would be appreciated.

Does anyone know how to get a copy of the DVD? I would like to bring as many back of his T206's back together as possible and thought having the DVD would be a nice item to own. One of the true pioneer's and seemed like a great guy as well.

My pleasure; glad I could be of service.

By the way, Apple owners will be pleased to know that the MP4 format works
on all iOS devices. I currently have the Lionel Carter video stored on my iPhone.

All the best,

I will always believe Mastro / Allen really did a number on poor old Carter. But they are paying now, what goes around comes around!

In his post with regard to Mastro catalogs Irishdenny attributes a post to us
that we never made.

We take our posts very seriously, and we believe that attributing a post to
someone else is a crime.

Irishdenny please issue an immediate apology. We are prepared to take further
action, if necessary.

Hiya Denny
All in good fun.
That's a rip-snortin' portrait of the Christian Gentleman.
Some lucky lad pulled this handsome Matty out of a box of Cracker Jack 108 years ago. Eventually Mr Carter acquired it. Many decades later it found its way, sans "the famous confection", to your old cyberpal Kawika, just a few degrees of separation from Sailor Jack and Bingo a century ago. Life is indeed grand.
Speaking of the Mastro CD, it is on YouTube after all. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50pkXT_UPm0
The fellow who posted it gives a short intro about Lionel Carter. The CD content starts at 6:40 +/-

I'll throw in this old photo for good measure.

Always nice to see old threads resurrected. I love the makeshift "card binders" Mr. Carter created. I do have a vast appreciation to how the hobby was handled in it's early years (along with a healthy appreciation for other things from the mid 20th century) I suppose the grass is always greener, you always want what you didn't/can't have.

As a side note is there a term for being Nostalgic for a time you didn't live in? Because I very much get that feeling at times!
