Default Mike Francesa: World Series MVP Shouldn't Be The Willie Mays Award

https://wfan.radio.com/articles/news...lie-mays-award

I agree with this guy a hundred percent.

Mays played over twenty seasons and has only one ring - why would they call it the Willie Mays Award?

Calling it the Mickey Mantle Award would make a lot more sense, I agree.

Your thoughts?

i agree that Mickey Mantle would be a more fitting name associated with the award. However, I don't care for the naming of an award after another player anyways. It gets confusing for me.

I think the elephant in the room here is that the committee who named the award obviously wanted to be politically correct. So if you assume it needs to be a black player, and Clemente (who had a 14 game World Series hitting streak) already has an award named for him, then it comes down to Gibson, Reggie, and perhaps Mays I suppose.

I hate to think what would've happened had Reggie's already supersized ego been further inflated by this tribute, so with Gibson's World Series record being near perfect, marred only by Curt Flood's foot slipping, I would have chosen him.

But otherwise, if we could be colorblind, I'd go with Mantle or Berra.

Mickey Mantle was Francesa's idol so I'm not surprised he feels that way.

Only three players won the award twice, Gibson, Reggie and Koufax so maybe one of those 3 would be a better choice.

This is a bit OT, but it reminds me of this 1972 Topps card:

s-l1600.jpg

The Rookie of the Year Award was called the Ford C. Frick Award. But if you look up 'Ford C. Frick Award,' you find it is "presented annually by the National Baseball Hall of Fame in the United States to a broadcaster for "major contributions to baseball." When did that switcharoo happen??

How about the Bobby Richardson Award.
Bobby still holds a few WS records and is the only player to be named WS MVP while playing for the losing team. Plus he is a really great guy.

Mikey Mantle 7 WS Championships in 12 WS
WS OPS - .908

Sandy Koufas 3 WS Championships in 4 WS
WS ERA 0.95

Babe Ruth 7 WS Championships in 10 WS
WS OPS 1.214
WS ERA 0.87

I'd go with the "Babe Ruth Award"

Why does it have to be named after anyone?
Why can't it just be the "World Series MVP Award"?

And don't even get me started on the naming / re-naming of ballparks with corporate names.

It's ridiculous!!!

(Yes, I know that the corporate sponsors pay big bucks for naming rights. But where does it end?)

And Golf tournaments and their title sponsors are even more difficult to keep track of than stadiums...…………….. it never ends.
