Default Has anyone ever seen this T212 Obak back before?

Posted By: Bob

Just wondering. I own the entire T212 set but when I went to upgrade a card, the card I purchased on ebay came with this back. I had never seen it before. Interesting though....

TBob,

While I'm not an Obak collector (thus, I've not seen ANY T212 backs in person), this back is number 31 in OldCardboard.com's gallery. Note that the scan is pretty shoddy though, so they must have had to get a copy of a copy.

Regards,

Richard.

"The Story in the Smoking" is not seen that often...there are 4 players in the 150 series and 4 players in the 175 series with that back slogan. "Immensely Popular" and "Instantly Popular" are slightly tougher. But the Big Dog Tough Guy is "Just Right" which is only found on 2 players in the 150 subjects backs and 2 players in the 175 subjects back.

Nice info, Mark. Where did you find those stats?

Here is what I have

"The Story in Smoking" N Brashear
"Immensely Popular" Howard & Hiester
"Instantly Popular" Bennett & Danzig (150)
No "Just Right" though

How about "Surpass Imagination" on the scarcity scale?

Danzig is just about my favorite Obak & one of my all time favorite cards from any series. The scan does not do it justice.

Only two cards have the "Just Right," I have that slogan on one of them, Kusel. Can't remember off-hand who the other player is who can be found (rarely) with the Just So slogan.

Bob, I have that back on a Manush 150 back. The only back that I am missing is "Immensely Popular". There are five other backs that I only have 1 example. "Delicate Aromatic" (Tonnesen 175 back), "For Exacting Smokers"(Bonner 175 back), "Instantly Popular"(Hetling 175 back), "Just Right"(Browning 175 back), and "Mais Paper Wrapper"(Briggs 175 back).

Edited to ask Bob what card has that back? thanks Peter

I have a Browning with the Just Right back-- is he the other 175 series player?

I think the Old Cardboard website has the complete list of backs...

I do have a complete slogan (back) set of the 1910's.....most came from the Trucker Boy find but my very last one I had to get was the "Just Right" one....it is by far the scarcest because, as pointed out, it only came with 2 players on front.....I think I will go ahead and put them on my website, in my personal collection, soon....regards

"Just Right" can only be found with Browning and Kusel to the best of my knowledge. I have Browning but no Kusel.

Do we know for certain these are the only two possiblities?

Peter- The pictured back scan belongs to the Hiester card.
Tim- Yes, Browning and Kusel are the only two known with Just Right backs.
So little is known by the average collector about these Obak backs that you can find them on ebay without the huge premium you would expect. Just Right backs on Obak cards are much much rarer than T206 Drums or T205 Drums or many of the other rare backs for tobacco cards.
