Default New episode of The Monster Podcast

Hi folks!

Episode 3 of the Monster Podcast is live!

Check out our conversation about T206s with Peter Devereaux, author of the new book, "GAME FACES: Early Baseball Cards from the Library of Congress."

https://soundcloud.com/the-monster-p...-of-game-faces

The book includes 300 beautiful hi-res photos of T206s and other pre-war tobacco cards, and fascinating stories about the cards and the time in which they were produced.

Lenox Brown is a legitimate back so I'm not sure why it shows up in Jay's "BS" tier. Also not sure who "Jay" is and what T206 research he has done. That would be useful to know.

First off, Scot, I owe you an apology. During the episode I believe I attributed your book to Bill Brown. Sorry about that. The book is awesome and I have referred several listeners to it.

I'm not intending to call Lenox Brown an "illegitimate back." Obviously it's a real back. My intent in carving out that tier was to bring backs together that have such low pops and appear with so few fronts that your average set collector, or even back collector can discount them. There are just 17 Lenox Browns directly attributed by PSA. I have seen 1 (maybe 2) change hands this year.

My research centers around comparative scarcity. Cards that are tough with a certain back even if the combination facially looks normal or uninteresting.

I can't argue with this breakdown. I love Brown Hindus, but am always in the market for Sovereigns and Polar Bears because I can actually find them at a reasonable price.

Jay,

Sorry for the late response. Thanks for your timely one. To elaborate, I believe Brown Lenox is a legitimate back since it is (1) factory cut (not hand cut), (2) distinct from other backs (in that the brown ink is truly brown, not black) AND (3) fits a distinct 350/450 subject pattern that confirms it is legitimate.

I don’t personally own any, but have seen a few. I would hate for someone who owns one or more to have their collection devalued on false assumption. Thanks for reading my ebook and good luck with your podcast.

Scot

After listening to the podcast, I don't think someone would misconstrue the Old Mill Brown as being unimportant or not real. I took the conversation to place it more in the "Wildest Dreams" than "Not really real" category. I would certainly be interested however on thoughts about the Old Mill Blue backs found of late. I have never seen a Old Mill Brown and I often look at my Old Mill Backs and wonder how much of a difference is it in person?

There is a large difference between Old Mill Blacks and Browns. For comparison, hold an Old Mill next to a Hindu Brown. That's how different they are.

Hi John,

Go to your Facebook Home Page. On the left, click on Groups. A search bar will come up. Type in "Tobacco Row" and hit enter. That should get you there.

Hi folks!

We just released Episode 8 of The Monster Podcast. We welcome former MLB pitcher Dean Kiekhefer (Cardinals, A's) for a fun discussion about his time in the big leagues, seeing himself on a baseball card for the first time, and his quest to amass the ugliest T206 sets ever with his "beater binder" project.

Listen here: https://soundcloud.com/the-monster-p...dean-kiekhefer

Just finished it, what a great way to explore one of the many ways to collect the set and also tell neat stories at the same time. Now if only we could find the other half of that Cobb…😂

You could discuss back runs by certain collectors to include Jay's run on Walter Johnson especially with the recent edition. Might even bring Hank on to discuss Walter.

Oh, my...Luke! Wow, just got to the half way point and Luke just said discussed budget and bankroll or as Jay mentions “salary cap”. Running into that now. I made a huge splash since getting back in, almost doubled my collection. I think I’m going to sit back, take a breather and research, like Luke discusses here. Great episode so far...
